Swapped steering wheel but horn now not working

Post by Flyhalf69 »

Hi, I swapped the steering wheeel on my sons 2010 1.2 moda (the horrible plastic one) for a 2014 flat bottomed wheel off a later polo. All swapped easily BUT, the horn now doesn’t work. The original steering wheel didn’t have controls on it but the new one does (not being used), the yellow connector went straight on but there is a smaller connector left which I’d assumed was for the steering wheel controls which we won’t need.

I wondered whether I’ve done a thing wrong as I would have thought plug and play for the horn as it was there before I swapped it.

Can anyone guide me please.

Thanks in advance,

Mark

You need different airbag wiring, or u can do it yourself:

You must insert the small connector in left buttons.

That’s really useful thank you. Is it something I should attempt or is a garage best; I’m a bit of a novice with a reputation for bodging things!!!! I did manage to change over the steering wheels though? Mark

All done, turns out the steering wheel was from a Jetta 2014 with a flat bottom. Had to borrow the grey wire port and use blue and white striped horn and join together.
Works just fine now.
Thanks for all your help.

Hello guys, sorry for waking up this post but i tried something similar with same problems. I took a steering wheel from a 2015 Golf MK7 with simple buttons (no CC or ACC) and install it on my wife's Polo 6R. After coding many buttons work (volume up, down, next, previous, phone, voice assistant and the mfa arrows). Problem is that the horn is not working and the buttons are not illuminated. I will try to change the cabling as shown above to resolve the horn issue. I will let you know of the outcome.

Did anyone found a solution for the buttons illumination?

You need BCM Max (090), or latest version of 087 to backlight on newer steering wheels

Bcm max 7e0, I don't think 7h0 will do the trick

My BCM must be an early 087 according to VCDS logs:
Address 09: Cent. Elect. (J519) Labels:. 6R0-937-08x-09.clb
Part No SW: 6R0 937 087 E HW: 6R0 937 087 E
Component: BCM PQ25 H+3 H46 0207

To be honest my main concern is to get the horn working obviously for security reasons. The backlight illumination is a nice to have feature :)
I tried to modify the airbag harness as shown above without success. I will continue the investigation tomorrow. Any tip is more than welcome.

For all of you guys with the same issue. The mk7 airbag has 2 brown tabs connected to the airbag body. My harness had one. My horn issue was solved after adding the second tab. You can either solder a second tab to the brown wire or remove the 2 pin brown connector (pin 7) and place it to your mk6 harness.
I haven't tested the illumination but i guess it will not work.

Hey sorry I know this might be a old post, but I'd just want to confirm something, to make the horn work, did you connect the blue and white wire with the grey wire in the port of the grey wire?
