Replacing Brake Disks

Post by Sam Murray »

I’m in need of some new front brake disks on my car as I’m pretty sure the current ones a warped and are getting worse.
I’ve been on euro car parts and put my REG in to get an idea of what I need however there are 4 different sizes of disk avalable and I’m unsure which I require.
I don’t have a driveway at home therefore I am trying to avaoid unnecessary jacking the car up and pulling a wheel off.
Does anyone know what size disks I need to buy ? And if so which manufacturer are the best?
From what I can remember the sizes avalable are:
230mm, 256mm, 288mm and 310mm all with varying “disk thicknesses”
My car is a 2012 1.2 petrol
Any help is appreciated!

Maybe hand over your car’s details like engine code.

is it a 1.2 3-cylinder? then you'll have 256x22mm front discs and rear drums.
you'll be fine with any brand like brembo, TRW, ATE, bosch, Zimmermann etc.

I checked eurocarparts too see which 2 different pad options there were for your car. If you have the 256mm front brakes, then it is the 146x54.7x19.7mm pads you need. It says it is for PR codes 1LR,1ZG,1ZJ; 1ZG,1LR which indicates the 256mm brakes.

The other front pad I find is for the 288mm brakes. I don't think that any Polo 1.2 actually had 288mm brakes, but online part stores tend to not get everything right with brake sizes. For example if I search for brake discs for my WRC (all WRC had 310mm discs), most online parts shops will also list 288mm discs for my car which is incorrect.

Now that you have been given some front brake PR codes, if I were you, I'd check the build data sticker on the owner's pack or in the spare wheel well side wall - that is, if VW Group still supply that sticker, I've forgotten - if you have it or find it.

This is where requesting a paper copy of that car's CAR DATA really does help as you will have all the necessary info to hand, so no need to guess.

ECP, especially their online store, always looks easier to use than it is, you really need to work a bit harder and check on the applications/fitment statement for parts listed if you don't want to spend too much time with the car in bits and you using buses to get back to ECP to swop parts for the correct ones.

They should be subscribing to EKTA or a similar system so that when your car's reg number is typed in, only the correct parts will get offered, GSF at least, used to use that system or at least one of them that looked exactly like the system used by VW Group main dealers.
