Headlight problems, dip &full beam not working together,
Hi all
I've got a polo 2013 1.2tdi bluemotion and I have a problem with the headlights ,
All bulbs have been checked and work fine indipendantly but the problem is when you have the lights on dip beam and you put them on to full beam only the inner two full lights go on and the dip lights go out,
Should it be like that? Has a relay gone?
I think the two dip and the two full beams should be all on together ?
Any help will be much appreciated
Thanks

Re: Headlight problems, dip &full beam not working together,
Hi, just checked on my polo 6c 17, when I activate the high beam with the stalk both the low and high beam are working together. Not sure it's the same on a 6R.

Re: Headlight problems, dip &full beam not working together,
I'd think that every car that was fitted with 2 separate bulbs for dip and main beams should leave the dip on when the main beam is selected - it was only the lower trim model cars with a single dual filament bulb, like an H4, that could not keep both dip and main beam on for obvious reasons.
I'm not sure if any 6R Polo were fitted with a single H4 bulb though, but if that car left the factory with "single dual filament" headlights, and someone has been creative and retro fitted "two bulb" headlights, then that would explain your problem.

Thanks for all your replys so far
I think the polo is fitted with H7 for both dip and full beam but I'll check tonight to make sure,,
I guess it may be a relay or something that's gone?
Cheers

Re: Headlight problems, dip &full beam not working together,
So pete.williams, hopefully when you check your headlights tonight you will find that the DIP and MAIN beams are both in the same area, so you have a single headlight with an H4 dual filament bulb - unless the previous owner did what I suggested in my previous posting.

Re: Headlight problems, dip &full beam not working together,
I've had both headlights off the car and both dip and main/full beam bulbs are H7 single element,
So not H4 duel element,,,
So still scratching my head as to what's gone
Cheers

Re: Headlight problems, dip &full beam not working together,
The headlights management (Hi/Low, H7 or H4) in the 6R Bluemotion is managed electronically.
Depending on the type of headlight (H7 or H4) it has a different coding in the BCM. 09 address.
It is a single Bit, specifically the Byte22 Bit2, disabled for H7 and enabled for H4.
Easy to check/do it with VCDS.

Re: Headlight problems, dip &full beam not working together,
To me it does sound a bit like someone who this car at an earlier point in time, did not like the single headlight look, so got hold of a set of dual headlight assemblies, and just managed to get them working - but only in the way that the single headlight units allow their duel filament bulbs to operate - you do know that an H4 would not last very long if both elements were switched on for a long time don't you?
Unfortunately this sort of ties in with what iichel posted, ie that this model of Polo, at that time, did come with single headlight units which obviously were fitted with the usual H4 bulbs.
If I'm correct it looks like a previous owner either ran out of "talent" when it came to converting the car to understand that it now had dual headlights - or they just did not bother and always drove in town at night.

Ah, so if that is the case, ciclo has given you the "how to sort it" answer, you will need to get or find someone that has VCDS though.

Ciclo, I thank you for your kind words, I only try/hope to post if I've got a sensible idea or answer, I'm not getting it correct all the time - just like some others, we try to help each other as you do.
