6R GTI 1.4 tsi Gearbox

Post by Whitwhicky 6r gti »

I’ve had my polo now for 12k miles and now recently just done two Nürburgring trips I’ve noticed that after a lap when the gearbox is very hot I get a shudder when pulling away and then very sharp gear changes! I leave it to cool for a little bit and it’s fine again! The car just clicked over to 40k and wouldn’t mind some info on what servicing I’ll have to do or replacements to that gearbox for my peace of mind!

To be honest I'm not that well up on the DSG, except to say that its widely accepted that its not the strongest that the VAG group use, hence the 1.8 in the 6c being detuned to allow the DSG to cope and the reason VW fitted the full fat DSG to the new 2.0 Polo GTI.

Even GT's GTI's R's are still road cars and the Nürburgring is hugely demanding on the components of any car if driven the way most of us would on a trip there. I suspect that you've hit the nail on the head with the heat issue. Hopefully as the clutch in the gearbox will be made of a friction material similar to brake pads, providing you have not completely cooked it ( and I suspect you haven't as the car drives ok when its cooled down ) like brakes, the future reliability of the gearbox will be ok?

If I were you I'd speak to one of the many VW tuners about potential benefits of changing the oil in the DSG to a higher spec.

Thankyou very much for your reply! Was very informative! I’m very new to all of this and to be honest I just don’t know where to take it or who to talk to about it! Is there a certain person that is like the go to guy to talk about this gear box?

I'm not that clued up on all things DSG as I've never had one, but in the past I've found the people as places like C&R enterprises in Nottingham, TSR in the SW, JBS Autodesign in Chesterfield to be very helpful and knowledgeable. These guys used to be looked upon as experts in VW tuning during the time when I was restoring my Mk1 Golf GTI and I'm pretty sure that won't have changed. Alternatively you could try a DSG Specialist - using a Google search I came across VW Bolon who suggest they are very familiar with DSG issues and that your gearbox should be serviced every 40K miles. They also offer an initial diagnosis for £49.99 but I'm sure there will be similar specialists nearer you. I guess the last option would be to have a look at the Skoda forum Briskoda.net as I'm sure the Fabia VRS boys and girls will have come across your problem.

Hope this helps - good luck
