Post by SamEvans »

Hi all

Does anyone know how the side sills/skirts are mounted on the 6c GTI mine has started coming away.
See my picture.
Cheers

It looks as if your sill has been pushed in behind the side skirt, creating a gap between the side skirt and the sill. Here’s the reverse side of a mk7 Golf GTI side skirt, which is the same design and uses the same fixing method as the skirts fitted to the Polo - the slot screw holes on the reverse side of the plastic side skirt fit over a series of bolts / screws that are threaded into the metal sill on the car.

If you look under the bottom of the side skirt, you should see two (I think) hex headed bolts. If you remove these, the side skirt should then slide sideways - I think, it slides towards the back of the car, so for the driver’s side on a RHD car, it would slide to the left. Once the side skirt has been slid sideways as far as it will go, it should just lift away from the car.

Thanks for that.
Yes there is only one 5.5 hex in the middle. Still not sure how to get it off as it doesn’t slide off like the videos on how to remove a golf.
Anyone else got experience in removing it?

A part number may turn a result on google, maybe even a workshop manual if anyone has. :)

If the metal sill behind the side skirt has been pushed in as it seems to have been judging by your picture, it’ll probably mean the screw-in fixing points into the sill are extra-tight into the slot holes in the back of the side skirt. Might be worth trying to push the side skirt inwards towards the sill at the point where the metal sill is damaged at the same time as sliding the side skirt side wards.

:( still no luck, i thought this would be easy. Perhaps a job for next weekend instead. I did it leaning on it trying to access the fuse box to install my dash cam. Regret doing that now. I suspect the metal part will pop out anyway once it’s off.

Does anyone know of any good VIN Decoders? I still have no luck with this and would like to see the rear of it to see if the brackets are the same as the Golfs before I snap something.
I’ve been suggested OEMEPC Or 7zap but they fail to return results on my VIN and also my friends.
Any ideas ?

6C0853859B and 6C0853860B look like the right part numbers.

Apologies for late reply, thanks for this. Not too much on the internet searching this part number. Just had another look at it and its tell tale jack damage probably done by a previous garage.
Think one of those paintless dent removers would do the job if they knew how to remove this troublesome piece of trim i would imagine. Not sure who to ask on this one, dealers would probably be ££££ and would probably damage something else whilst they're at it.
Maybe bodyshop, not sure if my local VAG specialist would know.
