Winter setup

Post by amer6R »

Hi, winter is closing in. I have to decide on tires, i want something fat and comfy. Im inteterested if anyone has fitted 195 65 15 on this little car. Thought if would be interesting like a little rally car, gaining even more ground clearance.
I saw someone in Russia running it but sedan version not hatch.

Not me, I've stuck with the size that VW used on the 15" which is 185/60 X 15 on 6J steel rims, and used Michelin Alpins A4, bought in Autumn 2015.

In UK, motor insurance companies allow/permit the fitting of winter tyres and alternative wheels without any increase in premium if the winter wheels are what the manufacturer recommends and with the recommended tyre size.

Going up to the size that you suggested, would give better ground clearance, but mess up the gearing and so the speedometer.

I considered fitting 195/55 X 15 on this 2015 Polo, but backed off and used the size that VW recommends to get the best level of safety/grip in winter conditions.

My issue is for anyone attempting to increase ground clearance in winter, just how much higher would you need to go in able to keep the "belly" or bottom of the car clear of compacted snow?

Luckly in my country we aren't still permited to use only factory dimensions.

Im targeting this 195/65 because of tall sidewall for impacts, and silly prices of rubber premium brands.

But i've read 225/45/ 17 cant fit, and radius of 195/65/15 is bigger. I dont plan on going faster than 120 km/h so stability isnt an issue.
