Starting problems
This morning I went to start my car (2011 Polo 1.2Diesel) and it just kept turning over but took a while to start. Every time since, it’s exactly the same. Takes a good 20 seconds before starting. Yesterday it was fine ? Any ideas ???

Re: Starting problems
It can be many things, if it cranks slow then weak battery, if it takes couple of tries ic can be crankshaft position sensor.
Or fuel pressure sesor, on fuel pump in back of the car ( if zou dont hear it on ignition) or a bad fuel filter. Many things

Re: Starting problems
are there any warning lights?
fuel pressure?
cam signal?
spark... no wait, no spark on a diesel
air blockage?
glow plugs?
white smoke?

Re: Starting problems
The battery seems fine, the engine flies over. There are no warning lights etc. I just went to it, it turned over for about 15 seconds without starting, I tried again and it started instantly. Runs lovely once it’s started.

Re: Starting problems
Someone has suggested it could be the ECU relay. Does this sound logical ?
I do appreciate your assistance. Thanks.

Let us know what the issue was. It might be useful for someone down the road.

Re: Starting problems
The garage rang to say, the only issue they can find is a leaking injector seal. They are going to change them and see how it goes. I did notice a slight diesel smell in the car recently.
I will keep you updated.

Re: Starting problems
The injector seals have been replaced but it didn’t solve the problem. The garage don’t seem to have a clue, they have had the car since Friday, I rang today and they have sent for an auto electrician. I can’t believe it, I think I will get it back home and have a go myself.

Re: Starting problems
I just remembered if your fuel pump was bad it would probbably log a low fuel pressure in the rail ( dtc) .

Re: Starting problems
It certainly seems like there is no diesel, the engine turns for ages and then it’s like flicking on a switch it bursts into life. Also, when the car is stationary with the engine running, there is a build up of exhaust fumes inside the car.

Re: Starting problems
What about the egr? It can also make starting issues.

Re: Starting problems
Well, the garage finally got to the bottom of my poor starting problem. Some idiot filled it up with petrol instead of diesel, I won’t be doing that again anytime soon. Thanks for your efforts, much appreciated.

Re: Starting problems
Fingers crossed that you wont be needing new injectors and high pressure fuel pump

Re: Starting problems
It had to have 1 injector and fuel pump filter.
