Clutch size

Post by jim325i »

Hi all
Just joined as my partner has got a 1997 1.4 8v. I'm totally new to the VW world so go easy

The car is in need of a clutch but I'm unsure of the size - I've seen reference to 190mm and 200mm. When trying to order from ECP/Carparts4less using the reg, it says the clutch size is 200mm, but Mr Haynes says that's the 1.6 only and the 1.4 should be 190mm - I can't find a 190mm clutch listed for the 1.4 anywhere.
Also on ECP, the car is listed as a 1998 model but it's a P reg which can be either a 96 or 97 but not a 1998 :?

So do I order the 200mm clutch and will it fit?

Thanks

Pretty sure that's a 190mm clutch. What's your reg number? I'll run it through the VW parts system

Well that's what I thought but the only one I can see listed on ECP etc is a 200mm :?

The reg is P339rvx

Thanks for the reply :)

It does look to be a 190mm clutch

Can you do me a favour and confirm your engine code? Itll be on the sticker under the boot carpet, in the owners manual at the front of the service book, or alternatively on the side of the engine block

Ok thanks, I'll have a look for the engine number and get back to you. Will probably be at the weekend unless I finish work early one evening this week.

No problem. Soon as you have it, I can give you the specific part number youll need so there can be no mistakes :)

Will be like AER or AFH, or AED etc

Hi there.
Typically I've been away working so haven't managed to have a proper look, but I did find a white label in the boot. It wasn't under the carpet (it was hanging on the rear panel) but it did have an engine code on it - seems to be AEX

Thanks

Ok, so its a mixed clutch on this. It can take either 190 or 200mm, but what youll want to do is use this part number 030 198 141 BX and this will let you find the appropriate clutch.

Try go for Sachs or valeo if you can. Corresponding part numbers on this link:

Be sure to also replace the release bearing guide sleeve - part number is 085 141 181

Makes a huge difference to how smooth the clutch pedal is

Thanks Alex, much appreciated 8)

I've never seen that site before, are they ok to order from?
I was looking for a Sachs clutch anyway (it's the only one I'll use on my E30s) and can see one in the link, so that's ideal :D
I'm assuming they are 3 piece kits complete with release bearing?

To be honest, it's the sleeve I'm looking to replace as the pedal is far from smooth and creaks (the pedal box is fine), but as the gearbox is coming out for the sleeve it seems daft not to replace the clutch while it's out - we have a pretty complete history with the car but no mention of a clutch change.

Thanks for your help

I wouldn't buy from them. Just use the part number for reference. They get terrible reviews!!

Ah ok. For the price it's foolish not to replace the sleeve

Ah ok, thanks for the heads up, I'll look elsewhere.

When you say it's a mixed clutch, do you mean that either will work?... If I end up buying a 190mm but the old one turns out to be a 200mm, I can still fit the 190mm (or vice versa)
