6n2 GTI engine oil - which?
Hi,
I am getting mixed feedback about what engine oil I should be using in my GTI. Can someone please tell me what I should be using, and is it better to go with VW Quantum oil or something like Castrol /Mobil 1?
Also does it depend what mileage an engine has done as to what kind of grade oil you should use? ie: lower mileage using 5w40 and higher using 10w40?

10W/40 is the correct oil for the engine
In my GTI, I am currently using Castrol Magnatec as I got a bulk load at a great price, but its VW Quantum Synta Silver is just as good. Thats my oil of choice for my customers cars, as its a very good quality oil that meets all the right specs.

Cheers Alex, thanks for clarifying. I have been looking at Castrol Magnatec - seems to have good reviews all round so I may use the same..

VW also use 5W/40 now too for GTI's but your best sticking with the Oil Alex recommended.
I also use 10W/40 and its perfect for the car.

I've used Castrol Edge 5w30 for 3 years now. No problems.

Re: 6n2 GTI engine oil - which?
Cheers guys,
A little hijack of this tread.
When I took over my 6N2 GTI from me mum there was 5W40 oil in it. When I replaced this oil almost 10K km's ago I replaced it with 5W40 as well.
Now heading to change oil and filter again and doubting what to do. Stay on 5W40 or switch to 10W40 as many recommend in this tread?
The car has currently ran 203.000 KMs = 126.000 miles. The car is used as second car for both short and longer distance travels.
Many thanks for your imput guys!
Cheers Marvin

I would put 10W40 in. Its just that little bit thicker, and its what the engine was designed to run.

Hi Alex thanks for your very quick advice
Does 10W40 differ from 5W40 in terms of usage?
Sorry, but am a complete oil-noob
Edit:
Do you happen to know the VW spec required for the GTI? Is is 502.00?

All 6N2s is 502.00. 10W40 across the board
You shouldnt use a great deal of oil. Its more about composition. 5W40 is a fully synthetic oil, whereas 10W40 is synthetic

Cheers again Alex.
Still a bit confused since a lot of 10W40 oils available here don't have 502.00 spec.. But instead 501.01/505.00.
Or isn't the spec that important?

That explains! No worries mate and many thanks for your guidance....
Think I will go for:
Shell HELIX HX7 10w40 - 5 Liter
or
Castrol Magnatec 10W-40 A3/B4 5 Liter
Many thanks Alex
