Help Please! smoke from car!
Ok to put this simply, I own a VW Polo 6n2 GTI which is puffing smoke on acceleration and on idle (doesn't on idle after warm up but still does on acceleration) and is burning a load of oil. It also spits some black liquid out of the exhaust if i rev when idle but has only done this after i have cleaned out the PCV valve/Oil separator.
The car drives, sounds and handles perfectly. I've recently had these things done to it to try figure out the problem:
Compression test (came out great)
Leak down Test (came out great)
New Thermostat and thermostat housing as mine was fooked and couldnt hurt getting it done
oil changed
oil filter changed
rocker cover gasket replaced (slight bit of oil was leaking to the spark plugs through it)
spark plugs replaced
Valves seals checked (they are fine)
Oil Separator Taken off and cleaned out (was completely blocked, thought this was gonna be the main problem)
its been three days and is still doing all the things above i said. Im wondering if it is fixed but maybe there is a load of crap and oil still in the engine/exhaust that needs to be burnt out over time? Or if it could still be piston rings, or head gasket even tho the compression tests and things were all great, or even something else?
Please at this point im thinking about getting a new engine completely.

If its blue, its definately oil
Piston rings or headgasket would be my bet

Re: Help Please! smoke from car!
The way to look at it is oil is getting into the combustion chambers/exhaust somehow. Theres not that many ways that can happen.
Compression tests arent always a true representation of an issue.

ahh fook, is there anything else that could be blocked tho? like the oil separator was?alexperkins wrote:The way to look at it is oil is getting into the combustion chambers/exhaust somehow. Theres not that many ways that can happen.

In your opinion, if it was piston rings or head gasket, would i be better buying a new engine that has done like 70000 miles less than getting mine fixed?

Re: Help Please! smoke from car!
Theres not that many places that could block really. As long as the PCV is clean which youve done, unless you are getting excessive oil pressure due to a blocked strainer in the sump for example theres little else that can sludge up
Depends if you can get a lower mileage one in good condition. Engine swap is probably cheaper in some instances.

Is that easy to check myself? the blocked strainer i mean?alexperkins wrote:Theres not that many places that could block really. I could get an engine in good condition, cover and everything if i wanted for £320 with a 90 day warranty or a year warranty if i pay a little more, and its only done 51,000 miles

Re: Help Please! smoke from car!
Youd have to take the sump off to check. Its a liquid gasket and a fair pain in the ass to do so wouldnt recommend it unless you have to
£320 is good for a 51k block. Would probably take the year warranty too.

Ahh so there would be no other way to check? i mean the pcv/oil separator was absolutely crammed so i dont doubt its blocked somewhere else anyway, it just drives so good i dont want rid of it lolalexperkins wrote:Youd have to take the sump off to check. Yeah i know a mechanic who will fit it for me privately as well so all in all would cost me bout 500 ish. Il have to see if it still smokes after a week.
do you think if it was the pcv/oil separator causing the smoke there would still be crap to burn off?

so the dotted line on my dipstick are about an inch long, 2 days ago they were just about the top end of the dots, now they are just below the middle of the dots, have drove it around but not a ridiculous amount.

I would top it up and drive it a bit more and see how quick it drops again
What oil are you using?
