Polo Avy crankshaft oil seal position

Post by Misfit »

I bought an avy engine to change in my partners 6n2 Gti which currently has an Arc engine fitted. Getting the lump ready I noticed the crankshaft oil seal housing (transmission end) was broken where the crank position sensor sits.
I removed it to find the sensor wheel comes off. I'm not sure if it can be aligned without the special vw tool.
I think the tool I would need is Oem T10017, laser tools 4795.
There is also a similar tool laser 4809.
I know the seal needs pressing and aligning but can I do it without the tool, I don't really want to spend £200 odd on a tool I will probably only use once.
I've got a new part on its way.
Any help or previous experience would be appreciated.

Have you seen this - for a Golf but the principle will be the same.?

Looks to me that the tool is there to fix the position of the ring and press the seal in applying equal pressure all round. Seems that you should be able to do that without the special tool, but I haven't actually done the job.
