Painting / removing cam cover

Post by 6N2GTI »

Good morning all :)

I have a requestion regarding my 6N2 GTI. The cam cover paint is starting to wear and hence it could use a repaint.
Now the issue starts..... I read various stories that removing the cam cover is a hell of a job due cams needs to be removed (if I'm correctly).

Therefore my question is, are there any GTI drivers around here having done theirs? And so, how did you do it? Remove it (and how can you properly do this) or repaint it whilst installed? In that last case how did you properly prep it? That is my main concern when repainting in installed state.

Many, many, many thanks for your help in advance!
Cheers Marvin

Removing it is a hell of a job - dont even go there

Do it in situ. You can brush all the flaking paint off with a wire wheel (brass) on a drill (be sure to plug the spark plug holes), then rub down with 180 grit, followed by 400 grit and paint with high temperature engine pain.

Engine cover off, spark leads out, mask it all off, plug the spark lead holes and go careful!

Hi Alex!

Many thanks for your reply in the first place :)
Well noted yours below regarding difficulty of removing; let's skip that part!

Regarding the bushing. Are you able then to reach all the small spots / corners etc?
Other way I was thinking is to use paint remover, or do you not recommend this whilst installed?

Appreciate mate. Engine bay looking horrible (in my sensitive eyes) and really looking to make it look nice again. But a bit scary hehe.

Yes albeit you can use a Dremel if needed

I wouldn’t use paint remover. That can make a true mess believe me
