Odd front wheels haha

Post by Bazzad88 »

Hi does can anyone shed some light on this, my drivers side front wheel sticks out of the wing further than the passenger side......or the passenger side is sitting further in than the driver side......I don't know haha, I recently changed the wishbones and ball joints and removed the front coilovers and then put them back, I added a bit of camber but I'm sure it's not that that's doing it, they're not leaning much, just sitting in or out differently, any ideas?? Thanks

Did you get GTI specific ball joints? They have a wider track than non GTI parts

I didn't know that, I just got new wishbones on eBay that said they were for my car but I don't actually know if they are different, they came with the bushes and ball joints on them

Never trust eBays part matcher as it is often wrong. Got a link to what you bought?

They’ll have the wrong ball joints. I’d suggest either febi or genuine From TPS/ the dealer

Ok thanks, I'll see if I can find some, it seems hard to find GTi parts sometimes

Ok, refreshed my memory on this. Same part number for all models

However, on 14" and greater wheels (16vs and GTIs), the right and left ball joints are swapped over

13" instructions - see the markings

14" and greater - see the markings

Ok so does that mean I just need to put the left on the right and the right on the left? Thanks for your help by the way

Yes. The markings should match up with the balljoints. They normally cast reproductions like the originals.

Just one question, if one side seems okay and the other not, swopping both will only change the “not okay” looking side, if both were the same part number on that car, would that not explain it better? Ie one side needs to be changed for the correct part number, then get them on the right sides of that GTI?

Possibly, you need to check the orientation of both, but yes its quite possible one is wrong as they are sided
