We are considering replacing the gti with an SEL (need bigger boot with kid coming) but can’t even find a showroom with any polo in or even a hint of when the first ones will arrive to test drive.
Estimate for delivery is march which is the standard three month turn around. Should get my tracking number soon so I will get a proper delivery date soon I hope.

The Edinburgh dealership had one in the showroom this week, in energetic orange.

When I ordered my current Polo GTI, the dealer was able to give me my tracking number as soon as they processed the order, which was the same day as I ordered the car. I think it may be a while before you have a confirmed delivery date though; you’ll have a better idea of this, once your car’s build week has been confirmed.

After a car’s been ordered, there are a number of stages in the process between the initial order and delivery of the car to the customer;
  • Stage 1; order is processed by the dealer.
  • Stage 2; the order is accepted by the factory. VW will then order all the component parts from their suppliers that are needed to build the car to your spec.
  • Stage3; once all the parts have been ordered from VW’s component suppliers and the suppliers have confirmed to VW when they can deliver the parts, VW will confirm the estimated build week. Once the build week has been confirmed, no changes can be made to the car’s spec (up to that point, it is possible to make changes to the spec, but if changes are made, there could be an impact on build timescales).
  • Stage 4; car is built.
  • Stage 5; car is transported to docks, to await shipping to the UK.
  • Stage 6; car arrIves in the UK and is transported to the dealer.
  • Stage 7; dealer performs PDI prior to delivery to customer.
My current car was built and delivered to the dealer in around 3 months. However, my previous car (a Golf) took 8 months from time of order to delivery(!). Hopefully your car’s build will go smoothly and you’ll get it around March :)

They seemed pretty sure it would be around 3 months but if it's longer than that I'll end up with the next plate so it's not a bad thing.

If anyone obtains any information on the 1.5 Evo I'd be very interested. Might find though that a Golf could be cheaper. Depends on discounts. The 1.0 Polo SEL seems expensive to me.

It's about £4000 more for comparable spec to my SEL. Bonkers.

Are you comparing like with like? I’ve looked at what the list price of a fully optioned 6c Polo 1.0 SEL 5 door Manual would’ve been just prior to being discontinued and what the comparable new model would cost. Without any options, the list price of the 6c is £17,610 compared to £18,180 for the new model (new model is £570 more). A new model Polo to the same spec as a fully optioned 6c Polo SEL is actually cheaper than the 6c - See below. This did surprise me.

Comparison doesn’t take into account any possible discounts that it might be possible to negotiate or VW finance deposit contribution, nor does it include any options that are available on the new Polo that weren’t available on the 6c, as the intention was to see how the two compared on a like for like basis.

For the new model, prices are from the price list brochure 5th Dec 2017 on VW website. 6c prices are from the last produced price list brochure for the 6c on VW’s website.

New Polo SEL 1.0 Manual 5 door List price; £18180.00 (6c list price is £17,610, so £570.00 more than 6c).
Convenience pack; Folding Mirrors; £160.00 (6c price £245.00, so £85.00 cheaper than 6c); Light & Sight part of 6c Convenience pack option is standard on new SEL model
17” Pamplona alloys; £325.00 (6c price £255.00 for equivalent Mirabeau alloys, so £70.00 more expensive than 6c)
LED headlights; £975.00 (LED’s standard on 6c SEL model, so £975.00 more expensive than 6c)
Rear tints 65%; £275.00 (same cost as 6c)
Carpet mats; Standard on new SEL model (£90.00 cost option on 6c)
Alcantara upholstery; £1000.00 (6c price £1,285, so £285.00 cheaper than 6c)
Car net app connect; Standard on new SEL model (£165.00 cost option on 6c)
Sat Nav; Standard on new SEL model (£700.00 cost option on 6c)
Voice activation; phone & sat nav; £195.00 (same cost as 6c)
Curtain Airbags; Standard on new SEL model (£665.00 cost option on 6c)
Passenger airbag deactivation; Standard on new SEL model (£45.00 cost option on 6c)
Climate Control ; Standard on new SEL model (£380.00 cost option on 6c)
Panoramic sunroof; £900.00 (6c price £890.00, so £10.00 more expensive than 6c)
Smoking Pack; £20.00 (same cost as 6c)
Winter Pack; £285.00 (6c price £365.00, so £80.00 cheaper than 6c)
Adaptive cruise control; £600.00 (6c price £400.00, so £200.00 more expensive than 6c)
Reversing camera; £250.00 (same cost as 6c)

Total cost including options; £23165.00 (6c list price with the same options is £23,835.00, so new model is £670.00 cheaper than the equivalent 6c model).

My 6c SEL came with 1.0tsi 110, adaptive cruise, light and sight and App-connect. £16535 base plus £750 in extras making it £17285.

The new SEL with 1.0tsi 115 with adaptive cruise, light and sight, and LED headlights (comparable spec) is £19915. Apologies my initial numbers were slightly inflated, but that's still a comparable £2600 price rise. I think that's a lot!

Thanks Oli for clarifying. Yes, on the face of it £2,600 is a big increase, but..................

Based on your car’s cost, it looks as if you have a 3 door? As the new Polo isn’t available as a 3 door, it might be more appropriate to compare the cost of a 6c Polo with your spec but with 5 doors, so it’s a like for like comparison. So;

6c Polo 1.0 SEL 5 door Manual; List price £17,610. With Adaptive Cruise Control (£400), Light and Sight (£155) and App Connect (£165) is a total of £18,330 (prices from the last published 6c price list brochure).

The current list price of new model equivalent is £18,180, plus £975 for LED’s and £600 for ACC = a total of £19,755 (Light and Sight and App Connect are standard on the new model). So an increase of £1,425 (7.2%).

That still sounds quite a large increase, but I think you need to bear in mind that the new model SEL does include quite a lot of additional equipment that would’ve cost extra on the 6c Polo SEL; Light and Sight pack (£195), App Connect (£165), Carpet mats (£90), Sat nav (£650), Side curtain airbags (now standard on all Polo models, but would’ve cost £665 on a 6c Polo), Passenger airbag deactivation (standard on all Polo models, but would’ve cost £45 on a 6c Polo) and Dual zone climate control (£415). So a total of £2,225 worth of equipment now included as standard that you would have paid extra for before. Plus, there’s a small power uplift too; new model 115 ps compared to 6c 110 ps.

There are already some decent discounts on a couple of the broker websites, so there are ways to buy at less than list price without having to go through the pain of haggling a discount out of a dealer! A new Polo 1.0 SEL with LED headlights and ACC currently has a discounted price of;
  • £16,990 on Drive the Deal (includes £500 VW finance deposit contribution, so discounted price without this contribution is £17,450).
  • £17,549 on Orange Wheels incl the finance deposit contribution (£18,049 excluding the £500 contribution).
And just in case you’re wondering, no, I don’t work for VW or have any affiliation with them (other than owning and driving a VW), and I’m not trying to justify their prices :) . I do think it’s quite important though that people consider more than just the overall price printed in a brochure or displayed on a website, which, if taken at face value, can be a little misleading, as other aspects may have changed (in the case of the Polo SEL model, the additional equipment that’s now included in the base list price).

Thanks for the informative reply above.

I'm interested in the R line 1.5. What has surprised me is the very small price difference shown further above between a 1.0 SEL 115 DSG and a 2.0 GTI DSG. Can it really be less than an £800 difference.

To me a 1.0 engine is going to have to work very hard. Not sure it would be big enough and maybe not refined enough.

I have a Golf 1.4 TSI 122bhp which is a superb engine. Incredibly quiet car and good performance.

Depending how much the 1.5 is I might be tempted by the GTI.

When I spoke to some guys in the show room they were under the impression that the r-line wouldn't be open to order until June. Something to do with some aspect of it taking a long time to pass certification. That seemed crazy to me as the German site had it open to order as of about a month ago now. I would imagine it will be open to order far sooner than that.

It’s interesting that Orange Wheels have prices on their website for the R Line, GTI/GTI+ and diesel models, when VW don’t have these models in the configurator or prices on their website yet. Drive the Deal also don’t have these models to select on their website yet, and the VW price list brochure still shows the price as ‘TBA’. It begs the question; are they the correct official VW list prices and if so, why aren’t VW showing them on their website?

If the Orange Wheels site is correct, then yes, the difference between the price of a GTI (with DSG - Manuals won’t be available until later) and a 1.0 R Line with DSG is very small. Does this mean the R Line with the 1.5 EVO engine might actually cost more than the GTI?
