@mike sel; Totally agree.

I think I still prefer conventional dials over a digital display. But sometimes, options such as the Active Info Display can be seen as ‘must haves’ by some, especially those of us who are heavily into the latest tech. I think VW’s conventional dash displays look very good and quite classy (especially at night when illuminated), so those who haven’t spec’d the AID digi dash shouldn’t feel too disappointed.

I think you’re right on the cost of replacement of the digi dash if it were to fail outside the warranty period; it’s likely to cost a small fortune, although It probably costs less to manufacture than it does to make a conventional dash display with moving needles.

You know loads about VW and the Polo. cab you hep me understand the levels of manufacture process please. My order has gone to level 3 which is date for manufacture and they detail the date and week number. what happens when it switches to "in production" do you know what info do they give? then in transit? etc
I will obviously find out in due course but I cant help being curious lOl.

I got an email reply today from my salesperson. He said he’s been off since Saturday which was when I sent the email which would explain the silence. He said that it is of course available to order now and I will be able to add it to my car if the build hasn’t advanced enough. I mean I haven’t even got a build week yet so I’m hoping that i’ll Be able to have it!

Ha ha. Not sure I do know loads about VW. I do like to research the new replacement model of my car (2016 Polo GTI) though and see how it compares to mine, so I’ve read quite a few reviews and watched lots of YouTube videos of the new Polo. Because I do my research, I did catch out the salesperson each time when I ordered my last two VW’s as they knew less about the car I was buying than I did!

If you’ve now got a confirmed build date (usually happens around 4 weeks before the car is built), the next stage will be your car being built. As your build date has been confirmed, the spec you have ordered is now ‘locked down’, meaning if you wanted to make any changes to your car’s spec., it would mean your dealer would need to re-order a new car for you, so you’d start the ordering process from scratch again. Only an issue if you want to change something, and there is sometimes a way round this if your dealer has placed other orders for vehicles that are for dealership stock that don’t yet have a confirmed build date - the dealer may be able to change the spec of one of these to match your amended spec.

Don’t be surprised if when you check the tracker during your build week if it still shows ‘Build Week Confirmed’ and not ‘Build in Progress’. The tracker doesn’t always update and quite often goes straight from ‘Build Week Confirmed’ to ‘In Transit’. Based on my experience of the ordering and build process of my current car, I didn’t get any specific information when the car was being built - but then I didn’t ask for any, as I wasn’t in any rush to take delivery.

I think Polos for the UK market are built either in South Africa or Spain. Once your car has been built, it will be shipped to the UK. It takes approx 4 weeks to reach the dealer if it comes from Spain and around 6 weeks to reach the dealer if it comes from South Africa. Once your car is in transit, I think you can check with VW customer services and they should be able to give you shipping details, which will give you an idea of when your car will reach the UK. I can remember reading on a forum a while back (sorry, cant remember which one) that cars come to the UK via Emden in Germany, where they undergo a series of quality checks, but I don’t know if this happens or not.

Once your car has reached the UK, the tracker should be updated to ‘Arrived in the UK’, and your car will be transported to your dealer. Final stage is ‘Nearly there’ when it’s reached your dealer, who’ll do the pre-delivery inspection and prepare the car (cleaned) ready for you to collect.

Cool so pleased for you, Worth being on here then. Good to all share experience and hopefully we all gain. Yes if they have not confirmed the build week for you its likely they will be able to include. When did you place your original order? I thought you said 22 Jan? that is a week before I placed mine. my build week is confirmed at wk 15 w/c 9 April. so I would have thought your build week should be very close to that. I am going for std SEL colour grey, std wheels and interior. Just a lot of options.

WOW you should work for VW! What if I don't want my dealer to wash the car? I want to get it detailed by a local PUKA detailer who will put a high grade substance on it. He says even if the car is brand new the dealer will have washed it putting tiny swirls into the paint that will need to be power buffed out before treated. I'm thinking of asking my dealer to prep the car in every normal way just please don't wash it. My detailer says this stuff he uses needs overnight in the dry to go off. The dealers offer something similar but charge 599 for it. they give it a lifetime warrantee and provide a huge bag of Auto gleam products. Not sure if anyone on here has experience of this.

Thanks for the compliment, but it’s not really deserved. I’ve just spent too many hours over the years on (predominantly) VW forums!

If you ask your dealer not to wash your car, they should respect your request and not do it. Surprisingly, quite a few people on forums (who tend to be the more enthusiastic owners) ask the dealer not to wash their car as part of the new car prep, so they probably won’t be too surprised if you ask them not to do it. I considered asking the dealer not to wash mine before I took delivery. I’m quite heavily into car detailing and have the necessary tools, equipment and knowledge to prep and protect a new car’s paintwork, but I took the risk and let the dealer prepare it. They did an OK-ish job, but they did inflict a few minor marks that fortunately, were easily corrected with my machine polisher.

Whenever my car goes into the dealer for servicing or repairs, I instruct them not to wash it; the dealer service washes are usually very poor and can inflict a lot of damage to the paintwork; the bucket of dirty water that’s been used on previous cars and a grit-laden sponge isn’t good for the paintwork!

I would never pay the dealer to apply the Auto Glym Lifeshine paintwork protection. I wouldn’t let them do it even if it was given for free. The Lifeshine products are pretty good, but to do the job properly, proper preparation and using skilled operatives who understand how to detail a car are absolutely key to a good result. The dealer will probably only allocate a couple of hours for the Lifeshine treatment to be applied, and the operatives doing the work are unlikely to have the skills that a professional detailer has. To do it properly, the dealer would need to allocate up to a couple of days, and they don’t have the time or money to have their staff tied up for that length of time on a single car to apply the Lifeshine treatment. IMO, the dealership price charged for paintwork protection is way over the top too; you can buy the equivalent products for a fraction of the cost you’d pay the dealer, and if you feel confident enough and have got the necessary equipment you can do it yourself; if not, then it’s much better to pay a skilled professional detailer to do a proper job.

Just consider why the professional detailer you’re considering using wants your car for two days to prepare and protect it, when the dealer would do it in (probably) 2-3 hours for a similar price. I know who I’d choose and who’d do the better job, and it wouldn’t be the dealer!

Got my updated order form through to sign earlier this morning. At least now I can sleep at night knowing that I’ll have the Active Info Display. No affect on delivery date according to my dealer which still stands as the 30th May. Just got to worry now as to why I haven’t got a build week!

congrats, Once I had finally completed my messing about with the extras list etc, it took them about a week to post the build week on the system. so you should get this soon. then its the long wait........

As I said I have a week 15 build, I expect that to translate to a late May collection for me. So that's w/c 9th May build, then 6 weeks to deliver
so I'm thinking w/c 21 May collection. (I know the south African VW plant has put in a new assembly line which starts on the first April. I understood that the Polo will go through the new line). once I collect my car I will need to drop it at the detailers first he will have it for two days and charge me £400 to prep and detail it inside and out. I should be able to drive the car for everyday use from end of that week. My first drive will be a 450 mile round trip to Nottingham to see family, that should give the systems a good work thorough.

I am not absolutely sure I have done the right thing in ordering one. Still its locked in now for better or worse. :D

Funny you should say that. I drive a Nissan at the mo. I collected that 3 years ago (in the autumn this year) and I paid them £299 to give it external protection. (I also got a bag of goodies). I was not happy at all with the end result, whoever they got to do it splashed the product onto the plastic side protectors etc. It took effin ages to get that stuff off. I later found out the get the 16 year old to do it when he has finished washing the service cars and he used leftover product form other cars treated that month. I was NOT amused or impressed. I get 16 year olds need to learn but there must be other ways.

Just the long wait now until Late may when the car is supposed to be ready for collection. :|

Hi.

Ordered an SEL on 7th Feb - no confirmed build week yet - dealer was saying 'about 3 months' when
I ordered it.

details: pearl black, 16inch adamantium wheels, 110ps dsg, sunroof, acc, park assist, rear camera,
active info display, blind spot detect, paddleshift wheel, 5yr warranty, detachable towbar.

I also wondered about the reliability of the new AID tech, that was one of the justifications for the warranty

And what did Adam Ant do to have a wheel colour named after him? :-)

It will be interesting to see if the build dates we have been given are meaningful. So far I don't know anyone who ordered a Polo to be built actually having it delivered, let alone on spec.
