Thanks for both replies, so 'top' does seem fairly high geared on a 5-speed....

By that you mean the rpm is low at 60 mph? That would be good for fuel economy which suits me.stevereeves wrote: ↑Thu Apr 26, 2018 2:05 pm Thanks for both replies, so 'top' does seem fairly high geared on a 5-speed....

Meant that top gear seems to be a high ratio for a 5-speed, whereas on a 6-speed you might expect a wider spread of ratios and 6th (top gear) higher than 5th would be on a 5-speed. Not quite the same but on my Golf, 6th is unsable below about 35mph, car almost 'ticks over / idles' at 1400RPM at 70MPH in 6th, in 5th it's about 1900 or so RPM, I forget exactly. When I get around to trying a new Polo, if an SE is ok at 70MPH in 5th, I'd prob go with that and save a few £££'s over a 6-speed SEL........Leif wrote: ↑Thu Apr 26, 2018 3:26 pmBy that you mean the rpm is low at 60 mph? 2100rpm at 60mph and 2400-2500rpm at 70mph. 95ps 1.0litre tsi. Consumption stats say its using around 70-75mpg when your going at a good even steady pace.stevereeves wrote: ↑Thu Apr 26, 2018 2:44 am Yeah MPG also would be great. I'm more interested in the RPMs as, I posted somehere else, I once had a 5speed Seat Leon which spun (screamed) at 3800RPM whilst doing 70MPH, poor car. For comparison my Golf mk7 is revving approx 2400 RPM at 70MPH, I'm not into giving cars unnecessary 'grief'. Enjoy your new car but please, don't thrash it for my benefit ....

Thanx, s'what I was looking for. I'm not obsessed with thrashing cars, BTY, but I sometimes do the odd trip to Scotland at max speed permitted and wouldn't want to highly rev a car for 100's of miles....
