If it's a proper drag-race then rubber choice will be a big factor if they're not all on the same tyres. Stick the Polo GTI on Bridgestones then it will be tramping on the spot while everything else gets away.

On same/similar rubber i'd expect Yaris to win, then Mini, then 208, then Polo, then ST. Not much between 208 and Polo.

The Polo bogged down. Probably on Bridgestones. The Yaris is a quick little car!

OK the Polo came 4th, but would you go out and purchase a Yaris? Where can you go and do a burn out like that everyday, would you want to go on a long journey in a Yaris, how big is the boot in a Yaris?
It doesn't mater what make of tyres it was on, even with a rolling start, it still didn't out perform three other cars, was it the auto box, but it did have launch control. The Polo is built more for comfort and style. If your not satisfied with the performance of the Polo, cancel your order and put your name down for a Toyota Yaris. But not everybody wants to race around town and leave rubber on the road

A lot of the tests they do, area bit tongue in cheek. The rolling start was possibly more relevant, but as the tester said, they are all quick ish cars and each has its own appeal.
The Yaris is very specialised and very expensive, but probably good fun to drive. They are all hot hatches after all.
Hopefully the Polo GTi is also fun and still has enough grunt to be entertaining and overtake safely.

Have you ever had a warm/Hot VW?
Have you ever had a warm/Hot VW with poor tyres?

I've had 7 VWs from new, 5 of them being equipped with the hottest 2.0TDI unit of the time, and my current Golf R. 3 of the 2WD variants have come with Bridgestone Potenzas S001 and suffered from rampant tramping which was purely down to tyre choice by VW. My Mk5 170TDI GT Sport and MK7 GTD were the worst for it. Give the car more than 40% throttle from a standing start in the dry e.g. to get away when there's a gap at a busy roundabout, and the car would be hopping on the spot. give it more than 60% throttle in 2nd below 30mph and again you'd have wheelspin. Worse still in the damp. Change the tyres for something supposedly equivalent or superior - be it Dunlop Sportmaxx SP01, Pirelli P7, Continental Contact Sport 3, Goodyear Eagle, anything by Michelin, and the tramping is gone.

When my MK7 GTD infuriated me with the tramping, I should've changed the tyres, instead I got the R, and even though 4WD gets over the tramping, the turn in grip of the R on Bridgesone Potenza RE050A was so poor on a mild winter's day at 11°C around a roundabout following a BMW 116D, I took them off at 6k miles for Michelin Pilot Super Sports and they transformed the car and my confidence in it.

That kind of restraint you have to use on Bridgestones (which are rock hard on ride, last a long time and are poor in wet or dry traction or grip) is going to seriously hamper your 0-62 times, or quarter mile drag race (which probably isn't far off an approximate 0-100mph sprint). If that drag race was performed by the GTD on Bridgestones and everything else had decent rubber, i'd expect to knock about half a second off the drag race time, to bring it in at around 15 seconds. Golf GTI/GTDs that don't have Bridgestone tyres aren't known for poor traction, i'd expect the Polo to be the same. You can see in the 2nd gear rolling start that the Polo outdoes the ST easily and isn't too shabby against the Yaris that killed it off the line (although the Mini was well away).

Traction control was off for launch mode, but traction control on doesn't do much do abate tramping.

Don't underestimate the effect of tramping and traction issues of a car with a decent amount of power and low down torque on poor tyres.

It was never going to outdo the Mini or the Yaris, but with that much torque I thought it would take the other 2 easily from a standstill and a rolling start, if not for the footwear. I wonder how new the rest of the cars were too? A tight new Polo vs well run-in opposition - it is a factor. I've had plenty of other cars, including peugeots, but VWs do improve a lot on runing in and usually overperform once they are run in.

Luckily, I've only ordered a SEL Polo auto with the 115 engine, so the only time I'll only get tramp or slip, is when the roads are icy 8)

Monkeyhanger is right. I have a GTD (for one last week as just changed my car yesterday). It came with tombstone potenzas on it and the ride was abysmal, the handling was abysmal and it tramped, boy did it tramp. Changed the tyres after 20,000 miles for Goodyear eagle and although it still tramps in the wet or if I give it 95%+ throttle from standstill it’s a different car. Handles better, less road noise, more comfortable. The Bridgestones would definitely impact the car.

The bad news is that because the gold gtd has the same torque as a golf R without a 4wd system (and the related 0-62), it will always tramp if you try to set off at full whack. Great for overtaking though!

Ill bet also the polo GTI hasn't done it's first 600 miles / 1000kms so power fully unlocked. Tyres play a massive part ( know, because i have a 400whp mazda 3 mps FWD that just loves to eat even the best of tyres :()

In perfect conditions i think the stock figures for polo gti are 14.3 1/4 mile, so that's around a full second slower due to traction issues.

If they are going to do a test like this, they should really do it fair, with details like tyre specs, etc and especially if that polo hasn't done the initial kms.

I think what is most awesome is they are all 2door except the Polo :D

So, let's suppose that I was thinking about buying a new car that is Polo sized and I had picked the GTI version, then checked out another random Polo sized car, "obviously (not)" I would then check their respective 0>??MPH times and choose the quickest one? I don't think so, that sort of thinking is mainly the preserve of someone that is running an old 1.1 Polo and is dreaming?

Why is everybody making excuses for the Polo to finish 4th, it's got a good 0-62 MPH time and it's a more mature looking car against the others.
Stop worrying about once it gets to 620 miles, it'll be quicker, or it didn't have the right tyres, from a rolling start, I believe it cam 3rd, so from that test, did the tyres bog it down, I don't really think so, and the thing is, they were all new cars, would they have got faster after a 1000 miles under their belt, but I didn't catch the other number plates, did anyone else see the number plates?
The Polo GTI is a nice, comfortable and stylish car and with the manufacturers time of 6.5 /6.8 0-62 it's no slouch.

What the mileage was or brand of tyres is just speculation; we don’t know. Driver ability will also be a factor.

If I had ordered a new Polo GTI / GTI+ and then saw this video, would it tempt me to cancel my order and buy one of the other four? No it most definitely wouldn’t.

It’s often been said of the Golf GTI in various reviews that (in the opinion of the motoring journalists) there are better cars out there. That may be so when considering specific elements of a performance hatch; the Golf might not have the most raw power or be the fastest in a drag race, but as an overall package it’s a great all rounder and better than many manufacturers more recent offerings. It does pretty much everything very well, which makes it a very usable daily driver - equally happy on the supermarket/school run, on long journeys or during spirited, enthusiastic driving when the driver wants some fun and can enjoy the car’s ride and handling capabilities.

When I bought my current (previous generation) Polo GTI, the Fiesta ST was hailed as the best in class by the motoring press. Even if best in class, it wasn’t for me;
  • at the time, it was 3 door only and I wanted 5 doors
  • rock hard suspension that would quickly become tiresome on a car used as a daily driver on UK roads
  • I really disliked the looks, especially that ‘wide-mouth fish’, Aston Martin wannabe style grille (I don’t like the looks/styling of the new Fiesta either)
  • spending my evenings in the local McDonald’s car park with other Fiesta ST owners has no appeal whatsoever!
So I bought the Polo GTI, in spite of it not being the best (according to some), it IMO it’s a very good all rounder.

In my opinion, the new Polo GTI / GTI+ follows the same formula as its larger Golf GTI sibling, so it will be very good at pretty much everything it’s asked to do. Would I care if it’s not the fastest in an out and out drag race against a selection of competitors? Not in the slightest.
