There's two carpet clips that the driver's mat pops onto.
Trouble is, they both wobble about in the carpet.
Screwing them further into the carpet has no effect.
Moving them to another place in the carpet and seeing if they tighten any better would be difficult, they're really in the only place they can be.

I'm looking for better quality (thicker) mats just now, I'm not happy with the thin VW ones and want the more luxurious feel I've had in my BMWs and Minis
Hopefully the clips that come with those mats will screw into the carpet more securely.

Have you got the luxury carpet mats, or the standard carpet ones? The better ones say Polo on the mat.

Without checking, I'd say the standard ones.
Do you have any link to the more luxurious ones?
I went for £80 luxury Mini mats and they were worth every penny.

I was under the impression that VW group cars that came with fitted front mats, had a better form of fixing/locator that maybe even screwed into an adaptor on the floor pan - and that all others just had the usual auger type rough threaded with a point, plastic locator that screwed down through the basic carpet through the soundproofing and that was that, though I could be wrong there.

Certainly the front fixing in my wife's 2015 Polo SEL is quite firm, as is all the fixings on my 2011 S4. My older daughter's late 2009 Ibiza SC unfortunately does not have any carpet fixings, but that is SEAT for you.

Edit:- please do not confirm that VW Polo, the current version, also does not get factory fitted carpet retainers - just screw in bits that are only screwed down into the carpet and soundproofing - progress/massive savings?

The locators that thread into the carpet/soundproofing are usually pretty damned secure, just not on my car.
Once the luxury mats come I'll see if their locators are better, or see if I can move them elsewhere.
Trouble is I'll probably be trying to locate them very close to the existing locator holes, kinda like trying to put a rawl plug into a wall too close to another one.

Andy on your MPG. I see your only getting around 35mpg in the 95hp polo that's done just under 750 miles

just to offer some help. on here loads of times people have said they get poor MPG until the cat gets over somewhere between 600 and 1000 miles on the clock. this time of year its not going to be best. When I first got mine (its the 115hp version) it was around the 30-40mpg mark but as I went over the 1000 mile mark I did note my MPG jumped to around the 50 Mark.

I the summer I went on a 55mile motorway drive, set off at 5.30am ish. I set the car up by putting it in Eco mode, then switched off the auto stop start. I switched off the climate control altogether. I set off gently, made sure I did no more then 55mph all the way, I did not use cruise control.

by the time I got to the other end I had done 69.8MPG. I have replicated that on the same drive in summer conditions since. right now on my 14 mile commute to work I am getting 46mpg on average over the week. now with climate control on, heated seats on, heater rear window, windscreen demist etc etc and in normal drive mode I have noticed this week its more like 43MPG and ive just passed 7k miles on the clock.

Although mpg will be a little better in the Summer (not such a big Summer/Winter differential with a petrol car unless you're hammering elevtric heated seats etc), and improves a little with running in, how you drive your car, how much traffic you face and how long your journey is are by far the biggest factors.

Today I set off for work 15 mins early as I didn't have to take the kids to school's breakfast club and my 34mpg commute was 38.2mpg today. Lighter traffic making a 12% difference to my fuel economy, and a taxi stubbornly hogging the outside lane of my short motorway stretch at 65mph - I would've been doing 80 if I got past him.
