So I phone up the main dealer as it's now showing 'Oil service due' in 900 miles - they quote £203 just to change the oil and do a few checks..oh and give it a free wash. Then told me it will need another inspection at 19k with pollen filter. I declined to combine the two as I'm not paying more than that it can now it wait until the autumn. Must be big labour charge to do a 30 minute oil change.

Hindsight’s a wonderful thing, but it would probably have been more cost effective to have bought a 2 year service plan. Car would need to be on the fixed service regime and the service plan would include a minor (oil change) service and a major (oil change and inspection) service. Current cost of the service plan for cars under 1 year old that haven’t had their first service is £296.82, and you can spread the cost over 18 months. I don’t know how much VW will charge for the inspection + pollen filter at 19k miles but you’ll probably end up paying more than the cost of the service plan.

I’d decline the ‘free’ wash, unless you’re happy for the dealer’s sponge monkey to inflict swirls to your car’s paintwork with a grit-laden sponge that makes your car look as if it’s been washed with a scouring pad.

Thanks for the suggestions, I often think these service plans are another money making effort to sell you something - often under pressure when you are sorting the deal in the showroom - but based on individual costs it looks better value. Anyhow it might be gone next year could fancy a change in 2020. The free wash does sound like the opposite and could end up costing more in the long run with scratches...

Bought a motor plan to cover these "incidentals" best solution imho.

Back in 2015 I bought a 3 year + MOT package and it ended up being good value for money as I would be using the dealership for servicing while the car was under warranty. After that I do all the servicing with the exception of the cam belt change.

I bought the 3 year plus MOT package this year when it was due its oil service. As I'll make a descision at the first MOT whether to stick or twist, it'll be worth having dealer history to that point.

After that, I'll see if I can find a decent specialist in the area and they can do all the work from there.

I certainly wouldn't take advantage of the free wash, I managed to quite easily improve on the job done when I bought it.

I always take the offered servicing package, they generally are not much more than the cost of a single basic service so always worth it.

This isn't going to make you feel any better but I took the 5 year guarantee option with the service plan. All services (hopefully repairs) are covered for a fee of €25 a month. I've been stung earlier with garages offering cheap services then charging €50 for 5ltr of glasswash, and €20 for a ltr of oil (9 needed) and running the bill up into the 100's.

No more surprises for me thank you!

Seems a tad steep. My mate had his 2015 Golf 1.4SE petrol approx 20k miles serviced: change oil & filter, cabin filter, brake fluid change, MOT, loan car (Polo £11ish per day), visual safety inspection (look for anything else to charge owners for) all for £225ish. And he is the type to just phone up: "just do what is required, by the way how much is it? ok, book it in"....

My only complaint about my VW dealer was that they removed a pollen filter that had a carbon coating and fitted the basic one which is the wrong type for a car with auto AC - that just pushed me to swop it for a Frecious Plus Mann version which is one step up from the carbon coated one, which like any Pollen filter in a VW is made by Mann and has the Mann part number on it as well as the VW Group details. Initially I was a bit grumpy about them using the older spec of oil, but that is okay for fixed period/miles servicing.
