Strange noise when full locking steering wheel

Post by S_94 »

Hi all,

As the title suggests pretty much. I've noticed when I'm full locking the steering wheel (mainly when parking/parallel parking) that the car is making a sort of groaning/grinding noise. It's quite difficult to explain, I'll try and capture a video/sound of it later today.

It sounds like it's the brakes but I have no other issues or noises from braking when driving the car normally. It seems to only happen when the car is at full lock and reversing.

Has anyone else encountered this before?

Yep. Also have this on full lock. Either the brakes or maybe one of the joints from drivetrain.

Think it's been discussed before and not something that will damage the car.

Would like to see some other opinions on this.

Glad I'm not the only one Matt.

Here's a small video of the noise: https://streamable.com/kdao5

Not the best sorry, may have to turn the sound up a bit.

Hi,

This could also more then likely be the powersteering pump.
Due to being at full lock the pump can Labour hard as you are steering into the steering stops.
This can cause the pump to labour and somewhat whine.

Just a possibility!

I thought the power steering was electric?

Some Golf owners on other VW forums have experienced similar noises on full lock. One possible explanation/cause is the ribbed sections of the rubber CV boot rubbing together as the ribs are compressed together when the steering is moved to full lock.

Your thinking is correct! No hydraulics in this system.
