It seems consumption is much lower on the 1.6.

I've owned 2 x 1.0TSi Highline models, consumption was close to my GTi.
The Vivo GT 1.0TSi however is extremely fuel efficinet, best I git mine down to was around 3.1L 100km :D
Hello Polovivo,

I guess you are also from South Africa. (I stay in Cape Town.)

Your Polo Vivo GT 1.0TSi is very fuel efficient.

The 2 x 1.0TSi Highline Polo you have, are they manual or DSG?
And do you mind tell us there fuel consumption?

Thanks.
Hi,

I live in Johannesburg.

Both my Highlines were DSG.
I was averaging 8.4L/100km, conservative driving. I see a lot of people have been complaining about fuel consumption on these vehicles.

The Vivo GT is extremely impressive.

I know a lot of people in Cape Town with a 5 speed manual Trendline / Comfortline (70kW 1.0TSi), most of them are getting about 8.5L/100km in average.

In Cape Town most roads are 60km/h, and when I test drove the 1.0 TSi (70kW) I found I can only drive on 5th gear when I am driving at a speed of 75km/h or above.(Due to turbo lag.) So, to drive at +-60km/h you have to stay on 4th gear. And I guess this is why most of the 1.0TSi (70kW) 5 speed manual Polo are not saving fuels on Cape Town roads. :(

Yip. They are incredibly frustrating to drive. DSG I found was much easier to live with.

Hi ho882000

I'm also interested in buying a new Polo, and not sure whether to rather get the MPI engine. Fuel consumption is my main decision driver, and I'm not impressed by what the 1.0TSI seam to give most people (7+ L/100km). If the MPI is close to this, I'll rather buy the MPI.

Can you please continue to post fuel consumption figures. Thanks.

Hey LeonB

He did, its on the first page, click page 1 and see the pics :)

Long term the 1.6NA will no doubt be the best bet (no turbo less problems) but from what I've seen my 2.0L is not far off in terms of average consumption (±0.9L/100KM more).

Hello leonb,

I stay in Cape Town and I drive mostly in 60km/h to 70km/h roads with some traffic, the following is my fuel consumption after yesterday's driving. When looking at the fuel consumption please also pay attention to the average speed, a higher average speed should have lower fuel consumption and vise versa.
Day1.png
And the following is the fuel consumption after this morning's driving:
Day2.png
It is safe to say that my 1.6 Conceptline Polo in average consume 7.0L/100km for my driving condition, and don't forget my car still need to run-in, I predict after the first oil change my car should be a little bit more fuel efficient.

I don't know what your driving condition is like, but as I mentioned earlier the 1.0TSi (70kw - 5 Speed Manual) can only drive on 4th gear at speed of below 75km/h, this is why the 1.0TSi (70kW - 5 Speed Manual) will actually consume more fuel in MY driving condition.

I also have a VW Caddy Crewbus 1.6 (81kW / 155Nm / Engine Code: CWVA), it has the same engine as my 1.6 Polo (66kW / 155Nm / Engine Code: CWVB) but in a tuned up version. My Caddy got about 13000km on it and its Long Term fuel consumption is 8.4L/100km.

I am not sure if you are aware of the 1.6 Polo (EA211 family petrol engine) and the 1.6 Polo Vivo (EA111 family petrol engine) don't have the same 1.6 engine, the 1.6 Polo has a timing belt driven engine which is better in my opinion. The engine bay of my 1.6 Polo is shown below:
engine.jpg
Another thing you need to know before you buy the 1.6 Polo, is the choice of petrol to fill you car. The label on the 1.6 Polo shown that you can fill 93 ULP into you car. as shown below:
20191011_093846.jpg
BUT when I check the ErWin (VW's official workshop / technical manual), it shows that the 1.6 Polo can only be filled with 95 ULP, as shown below. I stay in Cape Town and we only have 95 ULP, so I won't have a problem. You have to check the area you stay, will you be able to find 95 ULP easily.
fuel.png
Buying a Polo is a good choice, it is a safe car with 6 airbags, just for interest sake I attached a picture below to shown how many Hot Formed UHSS (In RED) are used on the new Polo (AW):
Polo AW.png
Just for comparison, I attached a picture of the body structure of the previous generation Polo (6C), you can see VW did a lot to try to improve the safety (Body Structure Strength) of the new Polo (AW).

My long-term average in my Ibiza with the 1.0 TSI 115PS 6-speed manual was 50.9mpg last time I checked, which calculates to 5.55l/100km apparently. I commute 35 miles each way on the motorway, so my fuel economy is pretty decent. I'm certainly not complaining about the fuel economy!

Thanks for all the info. Much appreciated.

I also stay in Cape Town and the car will mostly be used for short trips, so I expect similar results.

Do you currently drive "normally", or in "low fuel consumption mode" - if you understand what I mean?

I'll appreciate if you can update the post now and then with your consumption figures. Thanks

Hello vc,

That is a good fuel consumption, I guess a 6 Speed Manual gearbox also help a lot compare to a 5 Speed Manual.

I will try to post fuel consumption results here from time to time. But if you made your decision and bought your new Polo, please also let me know. So, I can stop posting fuel consumption photos here.

I drive normally, my definition of driving normally is when the engine's temperature is at 90C, I will change gear at about 2500rpm on a level road. Also, when I change gear I avoid energy lost, which means I change gear smoothly.

I search my phone for photos and found more fuel consumption information for you, the following is when the car got about 100km on the clock, I drove from Parklands to Tokai, mostly free flow no traffic on highway. (From Parklands go onto N7 at Caltex Refinery > N1 > M5):
100km.jpg

At a mileage of about 200km, I notice my car's aircon is not cooling. (The factory didn't put enough gas into the aircon.) So, I have to drive from Parklands to Barons Tokai to re-gas the aircon. (From Parklands go onto N7 at Caltex Refinery > N1 > M5 > Barons Tokai). And Barons Tokai gave me a courtesy car to drive, which is a 1.0TSi (70kW) Polo Comfortline with a 5 Speed Manual Gearbox and this courtesy car have about 2800km on the clock. The fuel consumption of my 1.6 Polo and the 1.0TSi Polo are shown below, both car are droven on the same route by me with mostly free flow no traffic roads conditions.

My 1.6 Polo fuel consumption is shown below:
200km.jpg
The 1.0TSi (70kW) Polo courtesy car's fuel consumption is shown below:

Thanks.

How does the driving characteristic of the MPI vs TSI compare? Is the TSI noticeably more lively? Overtaking at speed, etc.

The 1.0TSi have 4kW and 20Nm of torque more than the 1.6MPi, so on paper the 1.0TSi (70kW) should be faster than the 1.6MPi (66kW) from 0 to 100km/h.

The 1.0TSi does feel more lively ONLY IF you can keep the engine above 2000rpm all the time, at below 2000rpm it feels like a normal 1.0MPi engine.

But to be honest, for a normal person like me the 1.6MPi is already a very fast car.
If you know how to drive a manual car properly, a 1.6 engine will have enough power for overtaking at speed.
I meant lower your gear and rev up the engine when you need to overtake, and in normal driving if you change your gear smoothly to avoid energy lost the 1.6MPi will be as quick as the 1.0TSi.

An update of my 1.6 Polo's fuel consumption.

I drove 145km today, the weather in Cape Town is Windy today and 90% of the time is free flow with no traffic, the average fuel consumption for today is 5.8L/100km.
Please see the photo below.

The routes I drove are as follow:
Parklands > R27 > Century City > N1 > Cape Gate > Brackenfell > N1 > M5 > Tokai > Muizenberg > M3 > V&A Waterfront > N1 > R27 > Parklands
