GTI DSG MPG

Post by Andy Beats »

Swapping my 95bhp 'Beats' for a GTI
Can't cope with the lack of power of the Beats any more and never got around to fitting the tuning box I bought.
Wondering what MPG is like in the GTI?
I get pretty shocking MPG from the beats, mainly because my commute home involves a long uphill drag from zero mph and I've no option but to put my foot to the floor
So mid-thirties is common and not uncommon at all to see below 30mpg on the 'blue drive' screen.
I'm assuming the Gti won't be any worse?

My average since I got my GTI is 37mpg (fair mixture of short and long drives, calculated full to full tank method everytime). My best tank average (calculated) was 44.77mpg (long drives in Eco mode)

My MPG across 15 tanks is as follows:

Average: 34.99
Higher: 40.27
Lower: 31.25

I have used mainly 95 and 99 ron (a few 97 tanks from BP)

My long term average (1600) miles in is 39.7mpg. I haven't been easy on it from the start as i believe in a hard run in so it was given lots of revs and lots of engine breaking as soon as the engine was first warmed.

MPG is great so far.. around town with stops and starts i get about 36mpg. But on my drive to work which is a 8 mile commute on A roads i get 45-47mpg. and i get roughly the same on my return journey. My best so far was a trip to Redcar which involved some traffic but with the ACC set to 70mph i still got 51mpg.

These are with me driving normally so not too easy and not hard on the car. (odd quirt of acceleration to get up to speed out of junctions/ sliproads.

Previous car was a 1.6 ecoboost fiesta that struggled to stay over 40mpg with the same routes.

So no worse off really, which is what I figured.
And it will be nice to have a reserve of power, rather than foot to the floor all the time.

MPG is completely subjective. The biggest single influences are:

Journey distance
Congestion
Driving style.

If you are doing 2 miles to work, expect 22mpg,

If you are doing a 100 mile trip on motorways and cruise at 75mph, expect 48mpg.

All being said though, the Budack cycle tech really helps with mpg when you're driving under low load scenarios.

Welcome back Andy.

Interesting you’re going for the GTI. If I was a gambling man I’d have put money on your next car being an EV 🙂.

My best was about 54mpg with a mixture of lanes and carriage ways but I tend to average the high 30's/low 40's.

Would have been my preferred option, but the ID3 is too dear for my meagre use.
The GTI deal is only £70 a month more than the beats, so it will do for now.

Best I’ve had on a journey was 56 mpg on a 100 mile round trip to Chester zoo. Tracking my economy on an app, I get 40mpg per tank which is fine be me - I didn’t buy the car to drive like a granny and I’m getting the quoted combined figure.

To show the wild variation in MPG I can get in my 95bhp 1.0 Beats, I paid attention this weekend.
Drive into town, mostly downhill, barely 40mph and therefore very llght throttle use - 57mpg
Same drive home, uphill (obviously) but still 40mph traffic - 37mpg
Thrashing the daylights out of it - 27mpg.

The last figure has always been a bugbear of mine, I simply can't accept a 1.0 litre car can ever go to 27mpg - even when thrashed.
Our daughter's 1.0 Picanto doesn't go below 43mpg driven by me.

If it helps I was getting 15mpg in the Mustang. I went to the GTI to try and get something more "reasonable". haha.
