Sill end rust repair sections?

Post by Bikergonebald »

Is it possible to get repair sections for rear sill end rust? I see from old posts they weren’t available in 2018.

My 2004 polo 4 door has rusted through at the back of the sill and inside the wheel arch below the big grommet.

I would rather not have to make the sections- life’s too short.

Any suggestions?
Thanks
Kevin

I looked around and didn’t find repair sections, just full sills for over £70 so I made my own.

Very good. Was there any indication of the onset of corrosion in this area? I have some blistering just forward of the n/s rear wheel arch at the bottom. I'm tempted to take an angle grindner to it over summer and hope that some plastic padding will do the job.

All I could see was bubbles forming under the stone chip layer at the bottom of the wheel arch. Nothing at broken through the paint.

If you look and have a hole plastic padding or any type of filler isn’t enough to get it through the MOT, it must be welded. I also would not recommend it because filler can speed up the rusting process if you don’t stop water getting in the back of it.

After I made the panels a garage charged me £80 To weld them in.

The location of the paint bubbling in my Polo is the top of the wheel arch (top right) in your 4th photo above. I'll take the wheel arch liner off to have a closer look. Obviously, water could have penetrated and dripped down to the sill and caused corrosion. That said, everything seems sound and it has gone through recent MOT's without any concern about that area.
