I can't even get it to bite though?!?!
Any thoughts?
The bolt is 71-72mm long, and it looks like the one in the Haynes manual

From memory you’ll need to press the cup down as you tighten it else it won’t bite as you need to compress the spring . I’m trying to remember how I did it when I did my Mk2 as the setup is the same

OK, I had the Mrs trying to turn the bolt as I push on the flange. But I suppose I'll keep trying

I vaguely recall using a longer bolt with a few sockets to space it off the flange to tighten it down then held it in place with a puller then swapped it to the correct bolt

The spring is almost impossible to compress by hand

Good idea! Couldn't find anything longer in the garage, so I'll raid the engineering workshop in work tomorrow.
I'm thinking some long stud bar would make it really easy.
Not sure how a puller would grip on anywhere to hold the strain, but I'm sure I could wedge some 4x2 timber up against the chassis leg for a minute whilst I swap it over.
I just hope that all this helps someone else in the future!!!!!

Well it's done! I'm not sure how I would have done it without the equipment I had from work! The enerpac actually pushed the engine over before pushing the spring in, so I had to put a wooden chock off the chassis leg to the engine block on the opposite side!!!! Image

I drive a 54 reg 1.2litre polo.
Have the exact same issue where the driveshaft flange has become detached from the gearbox. Do i require any new parts or do i just need the correct tools?

Unless something has broken, it just needs bolting back up, and some fresh oil putting in. It was a right pain in the arse on mine though.
