Rear wiper blade

Post by littlepolo »

I’m not finding it easy to get hold of a rear wiper blade with a J type fixing for a 2002 9n, at least not online. They all seem to be the cartridge type fitting. Is there any source I could try before going to the VW dealer?

Hum, that is a bit annoying, VW did change to Aero blades quite soon after that, I changed my wife's September 2002 non Aero to Aero before it needed a new wiper blade, though some 2003 and early 2004 Polos must have left the factory with the no Aero, ie J fitment rear wipers.

Have you tried windscreenwipersdirect and there is another similar named online supplier - that is where I got the latest front wipers for my daughter's late 2009 Ibiza just because ECP and Halfords did not hold the "car specific kit" - they only held general fit ones that should work if you used the correct adaptors.

One other possibility, have you looked on the VW parts cat site so that you know the correct VW part number for that wiper blade assembly, once you have that, maybe search on ebay for NOS - I've done that from time to time.

Finally, maybe check that online cat for the number for a late 6N Polo, if it is the same, use that model when searching for a part for your 9N Polo as, I said earlier, VW only used that rear wiper on 9N Polo for a short period, so maybe it was a "carry over" from 6N Polo.

Maybe check the length of your original VW rear wiper blade, if it is 280mm then the 6N Polo one with J fitting should suit, the Aero one fitted to later 9N Polo is 330mm.

From ECP Valeo Vm32 280mm long with J fitting £6.59 in their sale - that is if your current one is 280mm long.

Easiest option is to change it to the later aero blade arm - its abut £10 then you can use the later blades which work better, and also look better.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago LOL
I ended up buying this - a little cheap and nasty but does the job and less than £9 posted :)

If you are going to change the arm and cover for the later version, which I did, maybe make your life a bit easier by buying a suitable wiper arm puller - oh and pull off the plastic jet and place a small disc over the end of the washer fluid pipe etc to avoid the puller forcing screw wrecking the end of the pipe etc.

I was looking at that item. Does it work OK with the washer jet?

The current blade appears to be 330mm with a J-type connector. I went to one online specialist who sent the incorrect item more than once. At least if I swap for this item I'll have a spare 330mm cartridge now. Recently I fitted a dashcam with rear camera and now need to keep the rear screen clear.

Funny you guys mention the washer jet :),I have just fitted a new one LOL
And yes the Arm fits over it fine.
The rear washer on our car has never worked since we got it,the jet was completely bunged up so I got a new one over the winter, the sun blinked out this afternoon so once I had done the spring oil change I thought I would fit the new jet, well for the first time ever - a wee dribble came out when the pump ran, although nowhere near enough to actually clear the screen.Anyway I looked around the car and there was a foamy puddle under the car just behind the n/s front wheel. After a quick google to get an idea of the pipe run,I found that the connector behind the ABS pump had popped off,so I rerouted it in front of the pump - clicked it together and 'hey presto' we have a rear washer 8)
This is what the connector looked like after clicking together and cable tying to ABS mount, pic was originally uploaded by Jimboe on vwaudiforum .

My rear washer was working and a few years ago I pressed the switch and found water pouring out in the area you have shown in the photo. The connector had somehow come adrift. I pushed it back in and then the washer worked. It stopped working again some months ago and I've been meaning to have a look at it. The only thing that I did some months ago was to replace the hatchback door catch. At that time I found the washer tube was attached OK to the wiper assembly.

So I filled the washer bottle and pressed the switch, letting it run for a while in case it needed re-priming. Nothing. No water at the jet and none dripping under the car.

I guess I could disconnect the joint in the photo and see if any water comes out there when pressing the switch.

Otherwise what could be the problem?

I suppose you could refill the tank to the top with the correct mix of washer fluid and run the pump using the control arm, maybe with the spray nozzle removed, if no water comes out and the tank fluid level is below the top, it must be getting pumped through and out somewhere along the pipe, look under the car for puddles of washer fluid and work from that?

Mine split in the rubber sleeve between the bootlid and the car on the left hand side. Was flooding the boot every time I tried to use it without realising

Hi LP
From the same thread on vwaudiforum...
There are 3 connectors in the rear wash system, all well known for 'popping off''.
This little guide was posted by VinceVegaUK
All 3 locations (unless there is more I don’t know about) popped off a few weeks ago and I had to chase them up and clip them back together. (Its just a simple plastic bullet type clip that you can push together by hand)

If you have a wet looking boot lock after you have tried to use the rear washer then the final washer clip that attaches to the main nozzle which is behind the boot trim has popped off. So you need to remove the boot trim, first unscrew the two screws that are inside the two boot trim handles then get your fingers in the side edge of the boot trim where the cream window surround meets the black larger boot trim. Ease it off and you should find it pops off quite easily; it’s easier if you work it from both sides. They are just a series of metal fold clips that pop on and off so with a firm but carful pull it will all come off easily.

However if you have wet carpet in your boot the second washer clip could be loose, this is located behind the carpet on the left side of the boot just above the wheel arch and behind the rear light. If your polo is the same as mine it’s where there is a little metal bracket and rubber strap (that would probably hold a tool kit or fie extinguisher if it where there)

The final location that I’m aware off which could be leaking and would be shown by seeing fluid poor onto the road from the engine bay is situated on top of the front left wheel arch underneath the air filter and power steering pump. It’s a b***h to get to, I had to remove the air filter (the large black plastic box on the right side as you look at it near the battery) to get to it, once I did I feed the pipe around the front of the power steering pump so now if it ever pops off again I can get to it easily.
Edit - as Alex posted above - the boot connector sounds a likely starting place.

Just to add the hosing had actually split rather than the connector popping off. Rather bizarre!

Just to close this off the connector in the boot area behind the rubber strap was completely disconnected. Strangely there was not any water there.
