engine swap problem bme/bzg advice needed

hi, the timing chain slipped on a 9n polo engine code bme, i got a different engine from the scrap yard, it looked exactly the same, apart from no egr valve, i installed the engine but it didnt run correctly, revs limited to 3000rpm and developed misfire, i now think the replacement engine is a bzg code, as i got the ecu from the donor car to try swap the ecu aswell, but the wiring sockets on the ecu are different from the wiring loom on the car, looks like there is no way this engine is going to work in the car, so the only other engine i can find is a bme that i beleive is a newer verision without the egr valve, can anyone advise me if this uprated bme engine will run ok with the original ecu, that has older egr version bme engine program?
