Help please Can’t reverse and stiff gear linkage 9n 1.2

Post by Driller »

Just looked at my sons car because it won’t reverse.
You can move the the gear lever across and down and forwards into the reverse position and let the clutch up and it’s just like neutral.
Some times you can hear a slight grinding noise as if the reverse gear is not engaging fully and it’s just touching inside slightly.
Also I find the gear lever to be very stiff.
All the 5 forward gears seem to be fine but just stiff gear lever movement.
I took the gear linkage cables off today and they seem to move quite freely.
The gear lever seems to move quite freely with cables disconnected.
The Actual gearbox linkage on top of the gearbox felt quite stiff Where the cables attach.
Think low gearbox oil level low might cause stiff linkage?
On the front of the linkage there is a black plastic small 90 degree lever thing and to the rear of the box linkage is a small plastic bung.
Also how should the cabel adjusters be set up ?

plate holders

I used to work for a company doing this -- some of the original data structures you had to build were pretty cool -- but it seemed a little odd to put your paper in the backend and put it in the front, and the backend is pretty cool. https://www.inpulseglobal.com/best-paper-plate-holders/

I can't comment on your reverse gear issue, but if you Google "adjusting VW gearbox linkage" or similar phrase to that, you normally find how it gets done, good luck.

Thanks for reporting those previous posts.
So if it’s any help to anybody I thought I’d up date my post.
I also found that when I put the gear stick into the reverse position the reversing lights would come on.
Also sometimes I found it really hard to get out of reverse and back into neutral to the point I was forcing the gearstick so much to get it out of gear I thought I was going to break something.
After disconnecting gear linkage cables to find that they are all good including the lever the box linkage was stiff.
So I went and bought a good used gearbox and drained out the oil in it to re full with fresh oil also while I was in there I thought I’d fit a new clutch.
I drained the oil out of the old box to find it did not enough oil it only had about 1/2 a litre.
Should be 2 litres.
So the cause of my reverse gear no working and stiff gear stick was down to a lack of gearbox oil.

Oh dear, previous owners not been checking it or noticing that it was losing gearbox oil.

Just as well you changed it. Running without oil will accelerate wear.

I'd guess that the average owner will not be checking gearbox oil levels.

Yes, also that is not listed as a periodic task during servicing by VW either, if I'm being honest, if I do not see any traces of gearbox oil loss, I tend to ignore it after I've initially confirmed that the level is okay once while there were no major leaks.
