water pipe has burst!

Post by quinny »

Hello all. It's a sad day for me. :(

One of the rad pipes has burst, straight through and almost cleanly.

The pipe has split at the radiator.

I've only recently bled and refilled the colling system too, I can't say I'm happy as I noticed whilst driving so got it home whilst cooking the internals.

The poxy pipe has only done a few thousand miles. I'll be re-filling the cooling system tonight, with Q12+ (the VAG stuff). Hopefully the damage isn't too bad if there is any.

Has anyone got any hints as to what to look out for damage wise for the engine? I'm not spending any money on an engine rebuild for this one too. If worst comes to worst I'll have to use the GT lump and change insurance company.

yeah, thats what I thought. The temp went up pretty high but being air cooled that was to be expected.

I'd say I drove it steadilly for about 3-5 miles with a 15 minute break in between, I didn't and wouldn't allow the needle to go off the gauge.

i had a coolant hose split before, only drove it about a minute with steam billowing out of the bonnet, bandaged it up and then replaced the pipe about a day later and never had any consequences.

if you're planning on GT'ing it then you may aswell risk it and then you have the GT there if needed

I really wanted to GT it, but my insurance company just won't allow it, unless I change company I might aswell go and buy a standard G40, that will be cheaper to insure.
