gearbox whine

Post by garnier »

After reading countless posts about gearbox failure, mine has started playing up :(

There's a strange scraping noise at low revs when pulling off (stops when clutch is pressed) and worse, in 5th gear above 60mph (only in 5th) there is a real high pitched whine under accelaration. It only happens in 5th gear.

When the engine is running and the car is stationary, if I tickle the synchromesh by gently pressing the gear lever into 5th (without clutch) it does a high pitched whine, but doesnt do this in other gears.

Is this my gearbox?

I've got a warranty (warranty-direct, £220 a year) on the car and it covers the following gearbox stuff:
Transmission - manual gears, synchromesh and hubs & rings, selectors, shafts, bearings. Clutch master cylinder and slave, clucth cable and pedal assembly.

Someone tell me I'll get it fixed for free :)

you'll get it fixed for free. there you go someone said it

tbh mine went this morning, i would have thought that would cover most of the things in the gearbox, not 100% sure on that though. As i don't know all of the components that make the box up.

Man this whole polo clutch gearbox thing has totally downered my VWness.

Only had it 3 months - spent £550 so far, on discs, pads, service and a cambelt/water pump change.

I had plans to refurb my RXIIs and get it lowered, but now I'm finding myself on autotrader looking at saxo VTS's :(

I had a 205gti ages ago and it was pretty much the same as a VTS. the 205gti was a great car. VTS's are still pretty new and probably dont cost half as much as the polo to maintain. They do have an image problem and are built like a paper bag, but still....

It can't de denied that they fly and handle well even at stock.

Oooh err missus

french s**t - sorry, but i have to voice my opinion here. Yes they may be quicker, but i'd feel safer washing my balls with an angle grinder as drive a saxo tbh

They have crap build quality and i reckon in the long term you will waste more money on a saxo.

No doubt the polo has its problems - my gearbox went this morning, so trust me i know, and within the last 6 months i have had the cambelt done, so i know it aint cheap.

But I love my polo gti and wouldnt swap it for anything else in it's class, nothing comes even close.

how did your gearbox actually go? Is it still driveable? It's a nasty thing for sure. Before the polo I had a civic jordan for about 6 months - it was completely flawless mechanically, as most hondas are. The only reason I sold it was because the steering was too light - the vtec was a dream though.

Sometimes miss it's bulletproofness when stuff like this happens.

yeah i understand what you mean - honda's are mechanically sound. When it went smoke poured out the back of it, but i was driving down the motorway at 70 mph

gearbox sounded horrific really wheering (sp) in every gear, lucky i got off the motorway tbh.

Nasty. Hope it's doesnt dent your wages too much.

I wish they made the old style CRX for a few years longer so I could get one that wouldnt be a binner, that'd fit the bill perfectly

reality check time: I'll just get the polo problems fixed and carry on with the wheel refurb, get it lowered and have one of the coolest looking hot hatches on the road 8) 8) 8)
