Query on 1.2 AZQ engines

Post by fazerman »

Own a 54 reg motor with the above engine.
Does anyone know if VW came up with any modifications or change in workshop procedure to combat the possibility of the cam timing slipping and the associated damage ? .
It appears to be due to the fact that although it is fitted with a good old chain drive , apart from the bolting on of the cam chain sprockets to the camshaft there is no other form of positive location ( dowels / dogs / splines etc ) ?
Any ifo gratefully received

Just another 54 year old duffer

I would expect that if this car was pre-upgrade time then any work carried out during the warranty period would be recorded at the dealer. I believe that the upgraded parts were a new design tensioner with a longer fibre/rubber damper. I would think that you need to ask your local VW what the VIN was for the POE of this engine upgrade and what model of engine(s) were upgraded or replaced by this upgrade. Also maybe have a look on www.briskoda.net for Fabia info and www.seatcupra.net for Ibiza info as they all use these 1.2 engines and suffered the same costly problems, also these two forums are more active in teechnical matters due to the different typical owner profile!

Try again on the Fabia 1 forum - don't be put off by no responses - the answers will be out there if you post in the right places (the Fabia 2 forum people are probably just being snobbish as they have new cars!!). Or there is always the Ibiza forum - but once again not the latest one!
