How to check gearbox oil level?

Post by pocketrocket786 »

can someone please advise on how I would check my gearbox oil - ie: where I should be looking to locate it under the bonnet.

Also how do I change the gearbox oil myself?

thanks

you need to take out the fill plug on the front of the gearbox facing the bumper and stick your little finger inside. The oil should be level with the bottom of the drain plug opening

It wont drop unless you have a leak tbf!

If you want to do it properly, get it from VW as its a fully synthetic blend ;)

Aye. Gearbox oil is a little different to normal oil though, as its a 'fill for life'. Its got a special polymer blend in to prevent wear. I swear by it!

hmm... ook then... il give that a go... had some castrol stuff in there for the last few years... but I think it wants a change!

Will go speak to the VW guys later... I need a new drain plug because I suspect mine is going to get mullered taking it off!

just looking at what people are saying about the gearbox on the gti's and found this bit, dont use any other oil other than the one your man said from vw as it is a diffrent blend and anythink elce would cause wear quicker! all i have evea put in mine is that and im on 104,000 miles same box so... cheers!
