do you really want to? I prefer the 5 speed - less porridge stirring and it makes 2nd very very quick. 1st and 2nd in the 6 speed are very short gears that usually spin up the traction control. Depends on your driving style I suppose, but it should be considered. 6th isn't that much longer in the 6 speed so economy doesn't change much.

1st: 25mph
2nd: 45mph

Having a six speed in mine and 220hp when racing a standing 1/4 mile using 1st to get away is 15.8. Using 2nd 14.8 first is just good for towing someone when they smash their gearbox up like me bro was fun drive a 106 quick silver couldn't get past us we was cracking up here this bloke reving the nuts out of this 106 and getting beaten by a polo that was towing a mk4 golf.

Basically the only reason u would want a six speed box is because it can take more power than the 5 speed or for pub talk.

i just do a lot of motorway driving and struggle to hit 50mpg at 70-75 just thought that sixth gear would hopefully make a change...

Probably not. Even if your revs are lower it doesn't necessarily mean proportionally less fuel is used because engine efficiency comes in to play - they are different at different revs.

If a 6 speed box cost £400 to install and buy (with an exchange unit), 48mpg (13.2 p per mile) compared to 50mpg (12.7p per mile) would take 80k miles to recoup.

yer you are right there david it doesnt justify the cost and i dont plan on keeping the car that long... it will do 50mpg at 70 mph now when the temperature is a bit warmer but im just wondering if there is anything that is reducing my mpg at all its serviced regularly iv had the egr serviced ?
