Re: Using Oil!
im just over 5000 mile now and used about 5 lts , spoke to my dealer a few days ago and he informed me that its normal for the gti's to use 1lt for ever 600 to 1200 miles and he also went on to tell me the audi a1's with the same engine are using 1lt every 500 to 900 miles and after about 10 to 12000 miles it should settle right down to 1-2 lts a year , but if it gets any worse than it is now to take the car in and they will do a level monitor check .
i recon this infomation might be smelling of a little bull sh*t but im still lovin it well worth the cost
and still puts a smile on my face

Re: Using Oil!
Well mines just gone in this morning for a few different things. One been the fact it used a litre in 1 week. Also, the DSG box crashing in manual mode. Whilst i was there, went out on a road test with the technician. I thought id rattle his brains on a few things, he said these boxes are very prone to DSG overheat, and also new engines should use quite a bit of oil. However, he did say unless the car usess a litre of oil in 600 miles or less then vw say there isnt a problem. They have an 11 plate gti there thats waiting on new piston scrapper rings and he said there on back order till the end of next month
apparently mine is border line of where they implemented the new scrapper rings but theyve put it on a 600 mile oil check just to be sure. He also said theres an ecu update out for the car which he said he was gunna flash onto mine so hopefully should get a full break down on what theyve come accross this afternoon. He also said vw headquaters have been telling the garages to keep hush about these problems and not to inform people, good honest technician though, made me feel better knowing that he knew what he was talking about / doing lol

Re: Using Oil!
My car was dropped off to the dealers yesterday to have the piston scraper things changed. The part was on back order but it only took them 2 weeks.
Re: Using Oil!
I spoke with my dealer today who confirmed my car was burning too much oil (about 2.5 litres) in 2,500 miles. They are replacing the piston rings tomorrow, so at least not as drastic as a new engine but even so!
Won't get the car back until the end of the week as it is very labour intensive.

Re: Using Oil!
I'd like to believe him but over here, anyone who has an affiliation with VW bar 1 service manager and 1 service mechanic isn't trusted because here, I believe compulsive lying is part of their induction training. Heard a good one off someone else over here that their car was buring too much oil when brand new, which is normal because the mineral oil that VW put in at the factory is much thinner than normal. Apparently when questioned regarding why VW do this when it would automatically viod the warranty on the car due to incorrect oil being used, said service person suddenly had something more urgent to do.....NMavs wrote:Well mines just gone in this morning for a few different things. Regarding ECU flash, so far it's only regarding the comfort / convenience block of software, cars are being loaded with the wrong, outdated software at the factory, hence why I had a spazzo climatronic unit which is now much better behaved:)
Re: Using Oil!
With regards to the outdated software, I don't have a GTI but had to take my car in this week with an engine juddering problem, and this was solved by updating the software, the annoying thing is, the car was only registered in March.gavs wrote:I'd like to believe him but over here, anyone who has an affiliation with VW bar 1 service manager and 1 service mechanic isn't trusted because here, I believe compulsive lying is part of their induction training. Re: Using Oil!
Well I expected to have my car fixed by now, but despite the dealer agreeing with me and saying it is burning too much oil, VW are saying that we need to run it another 1000km before they will authorise the repair
The dealer wanted to change the rings but could not get authority from VW, it is all very annoying. So have got to run the car another 1000km (or 625 miles) before it goes back to have the oil level checked again, then it should get the nod from VW.

Re: Using Oil!
Got my car back. It seems OK. the engine is a bit tight. any way they gave me a sheet with the repairs they did and all the parts they replaced. If somebody has the vag parts software may be they could post an image to show exactly which part was replaced.

Re: Using Oil!
Hi Big_amir, how long did VW have your car for to the work? I am in exactly the same situation as you were. As per my previous post, I am now on the 1000km test before I take it back, at which point VW will replace the rings.
I am really not keen on this major engine work but I have simply no choice. The exhaust tips are very sooted up which again is evidence of burning oil.
I guess you will have to go through a running in procedure again now for the next 1000 miles?
Does your car feel any different at all (apart from the tightness of the engine you refer to?)

Re: Using Oil!
Car feels OK. It was a bit tight when i first got it but today it was quite free revving. I did notice a few times some smoke coming out the back. spoke to garage who said it should stop soon. mainly there because they have had to do a full strip down of the engine. Basically they have to take the whole engine apart to replace the parts. Crazy!!skipster wrote:Hi Big_amir, how long did VW have your car for to the work? Any way mine car has done in excess of 10,000 miles now. i will see how it gets on if it is the same i will keep taking it back to VW.
Re: Using Oil!
mmmm - that does not sound good, to actually have a new engine fitted and still suffer high oil consumption!POLOGTI2011 wrote:Mines had a new engine at 3000 still drinking, if it does it as bad im wanting a refund or a new one not happy with it at all, but I adore the car!
Re: Using Oil!
Update form me, I did a HARD run in on my car and so far, 3000kms (2500 miles I think) and it would have been lucky to have used 1 litre of oil. A mate of mine here also has a polo GTI, his used a fair bit in the first 2000kms, topped up with LiquiMoly oil and has hardy drunk a drip!
