My guess is there is a fault with components in some engines which leads to excessive oil use.

Mine has had the oil light come on for the first time after 2200 miles, which means I'm not too worried... yet.
I would agree that there are some engines which are affected by faulty components. I hope for your sake that you are right about your engine. My own experience of having owned VW and Audi cars (8 VW and 3 Audi in total) over 16 years is that the Polo GTI is the only car which has used oil. :(

Yes, the only other car I have owned which needed regular oil checks was a Mazda RX-8 I used to own, and using a rotary engine that was designed to use more anyway. I can say though that used about 0.5 litre per 1000 miles which is somewhat better than the Polo.

Edi30, just wondering if you have a reciept of the work done to your car, same as you Big Amir.

When they replaced the pistons and rings, was there any mention of machining of the bores and re-honing by any chance?

I have a theory as to why you guys might still be using oil, even after getting components replaced, only a theory at this stage but it's something that popped into my mind after an experience one of the guys in the office had when he bought a Toyota Prado off an old couple...... To confirm it though, I need to know exactly what the service hacks did when they performed this work......

My car is going in next week to have the work done, and I will ask for the receipt/job card. I have had similar thoughts and concerns because if the bores are not honed the new rings will never run in properly and seal, therefore it will continue to use oil as a result.

Thanks for the update, sounds like the work done was a waste of time, so hope you hear back soon. I don't really want the new rings in mine if it isn't going to be any better :?

Mate, did you get a job sheet of the work carried out? Was there any mention of honing or machining....?

I am taking my car back to VW very soon now, driving on Saturday there was an enormous (no exaggeration) plume of oil smoke out the exhaust when pulling away.

I am still only 430 miles (650km) into the 1000km test and I can see now that the level is starting to drop away now on the dipstick, it did seem to stay static for a while but I think this was only because it was brimmed right up by the dealer.

By the time the car gets booked in, I will be much nearer the 1000km mark anyway but I just want the problem sorted!

Hey guys, just wondering what the code is on your VINs.

Here, cars are now at:
WVWZZZ6RZCYxxxxxx

Mine, built week 12 2011 is:
WVWZZZ6RZBYxxxxxx

Are any of yours by chance:
WVWZZZ6RZAYxxxxxx

Weird how there is only 1 known major oil consumtion issue here, yet it's seemingly widespread over there....

Been reading these posts with interest. I too have oil issues and have highlighted them on another Polo website. For the time being I'm going for the piston ring upgrade. Love the car, but do not have sufficient confidence in the TSI engine to ever own it out of warranty. Think we should all be contacting mainstream car publications.

Mine was registered Sept 2010 and is wvwzzz6RzBY

Does the oil problem just affect VW Polo TSI or does it affect other VW Group cars like the Seat Ibiza TSI? Just wondering, as I am considering getting a Seat Ibiza 1.2 TSI DSG next year, don't want to get it if I have to top up the oil every month.

No - I don't think you will have any problems with a 1.2 TSI, the issue just seems to be with the twin charge 180PS 1.4 engine in the Polo. I have not heard of any issues with similar engines on the Seat or Audi.
