Why dipstick and sensor cannot be compared?

_Total capacity of oil is 3.6liter
_From max to min on the dipstick (milled part) there is a liter.
_Usually (from what I've heard, never happened to me) the oil light come up when the dipstick is barely touched by oil ( usually the orange ball at the bottom of it).
_Sensor is setted to alert at 35mm
_Equation says that 35mm's warning correspond to 2.3liters, so lower than min level on the dipstick, this seems to be correct...

BTW I agree with you, waiting for oil light is a gamble...! :)

Hearing rumours VW is working hard on a new ,, solution '' for the oil problem. Something to do with a plug. Heared the 2.0TSI had the same oil problem in the beginning and they constructed something for it what helped reduce the oil consumption dramatically. Now they should be designing the same solution for the 1.4TSI.

Well, hope it's true. Would be darn time they do something about this problem.

Wonder if they do get a solution they all of a sudden decide to anounce a recall and fix on the engine code affected thereby admitting the flaw or carry on and only fixing those who appear with the issue as they complain about it. If their attitude until now is anything to go by we know the answer to that one. :(

I think that they will repair only the cars with problems and seems that they will cover expenses also if warranty has already expired...
Something to do with oil separation system and oil itself...? :?:

Finally it seems that we know what will change and when (Sept 2012) the new engine CTHE will be introduced, from our "infiltrated" in VW:

Using Oil!

Post by gavs »

The oil capacity is actually 4.5 liters for a start.

To compare the level of the dipstick vs the oil sensor is redundant because you are comparing one measurement device that everyone has access too that is the only device that should be relied upon (the dipstick) vs a technological method that very few of us have access to that does not give a proper, fail safe method of measuring unless you know exactly what to look for.

Couple of other things:
From the BASE OF THE ORANGE BALL to the MAXIMUM mark is 1 liter, not the minimum mark.

If the light comes on at 35 mm AT REST then based in my data logging, under extreme environments, there is only going to be approx 23-23mm of oil in the sump, by which point critical engine wear and damage has happened.

The moral is this. Check your oil weekly as the owners manual states. If its in the "top up" region of the dipstick, then top it up.

Are you sure?
My user manual says that from max to min I can add one liter...

That's certainly not true. I'm filling my oil level pretty often. Ones it came down to just under the min mark and I topped it up with not even 500ml back to max.

We will probably have different dipsticks or different sumps...

In my user manual it's reported that when the oil is in "A" range you have to fill with one liter...

If that manual was true, I already had to fill 10 liters of oil. After 1500km my level is always down to A and I top it up with somewhere near 300/350ml.

I used 3l now at 15.000km. Gonna check my level tomorrow, it now has 0W40 oil in it, curious if the consumption has decreased.

Ok, unless the italian manual is different...

It clearly says "Area C: Oil must be refilled (approximately 1.0l)."

Then, if you read on it say that the level should only ever be refilled at 0.5l at a time. I actually measured, with a measuring jug, the top litre and on flat, level ground, from the oil J-U-S-T touching the bottom of the orange ball, it took 1.0L to reach the base of the orange sausage. No more, no less.

I agree with you there gavs...when i hit 2500km...checked and mine was more or less middle of B and i filled up with 450ml so it would be 1 liter top to bottom...well on mine it is.

So you are saying one liter from min to max, right...?

@Gav:
The Italian manual is the same: if oil is in sector C (min or a little lower), then one liter is needed...
Anyway, they are a little approximative saying that if oil is in B half liter is needed: what about having the oil just a little below max (that is always B sector): do I have to had half liter? It seems too much...

BTW, never tried, never gone under 3/4 and never added more than 200ml per time (totally 600ml in 9.600Km)

Topped up again this weekend, having just about polished off 1 litre in 1000 miles. Once again - I saw an enormous oil smoke cloud out of the exhaust when I booted it to overtake, and I don't mean very high revs, this was shifting down from 7th to 6th!

Still - I am told by VW that it is normal usage and the smoke is nothing to worry about?

1000 miles was done last week and the car used just under a litre of oil. The dealership have now addmited it's a problem after saying there was nothing wrong with it and never heard of the issue before!
