G40 box and 8p have different ratios and final drives but the gears all work out to be fairly similar, 5th is slightly longer on a G, the G box is more similar to the GT box in that 1,3,4 + 5 are the same but the final drive is alot lower ratio on a G and 2nd gear is slightly different (possibly so 60mph can be reached in it) 8p is probably the best box to have, bit of a jack of all trades really, good round town and on the motorway. My 1.4 GT will have an 8p in it sooner or later.

Kinda gone off the boil with updating it of late (there's only so many things i can fit in my life, and p*ssing about researching and updating a gearbox spreadsheet got squeezed out when i was no longer buying one) but the basic figures are there for your perusal and own opinion forming.
one basic thing i'd have to fix with that is adding in a diesel box i found (most like a variation on 8p) and altering the max speeds in gear for GT (6800rpm), G40 (6600rpm) and mk2s (6300rpm reccomended) instead of the flat 6500 (CLs)... as well as altering some of the comments!
Also if GT2 hasn't lied to me, the AFA gearset lives on in more recent sporty VWs, such as the 1.4 Lupo, just with a "kinder" 3.89 final drive instead of that evil 4.26
Basic conclusion, from memory: GT and G40 internal ratios are almost exactly the same, but G40 has much "taller" final drive to suit it's power and torque increase and better spread of both across the revs. 4th on the G40 is more similar to 5th on the GT.... both pretty close-set gearboxes (not very much wider than a standard 4-speed), 1-4 are tucked tightly together, and 5th is the motorway gear, quite a rev drop in comparison. Much better for sporty-type driving and keeping the motor on the boil til you're into the top end of the car's performance anyway (~90mph for GT, ~110 for G40).
8P is a different beast, designed more for cruising in lower powered models, basically its a standard 4-speed with a motorway gear bolted on, and not as great a rev drop as 4th-5th in the sport boxes (as 4th was already pretty high - not far off of G40 4th/GT 5th). Overall a few percent "shorter" than the G40 one. Would make a decent swap-out but you might find the rev drops in the lower gears are too great... not to mention 1st being too low overall, unless you have extreeemly phat tyres and do a lot of uphill towing.
The change of 2nd gear from GT to G40 is wierd, it's like a 1 percent change or so.... maybe it was because the car reached 99.5 km/h on the limiter beforehand, and 100.3 afterwards, for the 0-100 dash, but i'm sure i remember it as actually being *lower*... (as for the gt itself, you can just about get 70 in 3rd??
)
Errors and omissions excepted, any corrections gratefully recieved. Particularly those i've been corrected on before and forgot about.

Yeah. He was meant to be going down, but the weather has been bad recently so he's left it for now.
I'm gonna ring this VAG scrapyard, coz apparently they have an AHZ box there, which would be better suited for me. If I can get one of these, pinchy will have your GT box and you still have the 8P box. If not, I will get the 8P box and swap with yours, as previously agreed.
Cheers.

Just to confirm what polog40racer was saying, this "test" of the GT engine in a CL chassis is pretty much true!!! My bro has just bought the car off him, and woo is it nippy! For an almost standard engine anyway. It does sound plausable too, as it is registed in January 1991, a few months before the GT came out in the UK I gather. I can't say i know too much on this topic, but from what Polog40racer has explained to me and my bro, the engine is from a mk2 polo Coupe S 75hp that was released in Germany, rather than the 55hp in the UK. Something like that anyway.

PAUL: (concept-e 's brother)
right i own one of the cars in question, bought from polog40racer.
its quick.if the standard 1272cc CL is supposed to be 55bhp then this is not a 55bhp CL.
its quick, and much quicker than the 45bhp 1043cc CL my brother used to have. much more of an increase than just 10bhp over a 1litre CL
so at the end of this little post i will bring it along to any future meets and you can make up your own minds!!!
Polog40racer...my aim is to re-instate the 138bhp mark that you were at long ago!!

That'll possibly be yer evil AFA thing you're thinking of, either that or the AHZ itself (5th = 4th on 8P? thats the one you meant with the 4th?).. the AHD has the longer ratio (by dint of different final on same internals). I think.Gareth_GT_Hatch wrote:I agree, you having the AHZ will be alot better than the AHD box outta mine. Make sure its definately an AHZ tho becuase theres another 1 litre one that has the same 5th as the 4th on ur box now, whereas the AHZ has a marginally longer 5th.
Could be wrong, just reading the numbers up off the chart (which mostly came from ETKA... and therefore probably as falliable as the average dealership mechanic!

No offence, but your not going to get 138 bhp out of that engine as it was. I'm not going to argue with people over this but to get that kind of power needs some very serious work. For example it would need things like capacity and compression increases plus a whole host of other things.concept-e wrote:PAUL: (concept-e 's brother)

PAUL:
i was told by polog40racer (aka PAUL) who had the car before me that it was running 138bhp at one time after it had some fancy stuff done to it!
its no longer at that spec now. Drove to Hull today to pick up my brother (whos account this is) Steve's new GT.
i can officially say that my CL/GT/unknown car car pull over 100 at about 4.7K on the dials and was still going strong but i ran out of clear motorway!
