Are You Using Oil?
Re: Are You Using Oil?
Fair point. Yes - I have the 3 door and I remember the salesman at the time saying about the 5 door coming from SA and the 3 door from Spain. I always thought it a bit strange how the 3 and 5 door models could be built in separate continents.
Anyway - somewhat drifting off topic I think.
Re: Are You Using Oil?
Confirmed. I was in the Christchurch New Zealand dealership today and I got the parts department to feed the chassis number of a 5-door GTI into the system. It was built in Pamplona, Spain. My 5-door 1.2 TSI is built in South Africa. this would leave me to believe that all GTIs are built in Spain.LocoPolo70 wrote:GTI- Pamplona, Spain.
Re: Are You Using Oil?
I went in to buy a MY13 5-door Polo GTI today, brand new. Before signing on the dotted line, I checked the chassis number for a build date and the engine number. The build date was August 2012 and the engine was a CAVE. Ironically, they also have an "almost brand new" (registered 13th March) demonstrator which on checking was built 2 months later in October 2012 and does have the CTHE engine. So beware - not all MY13 cars have the CTHE engine.Hi Simon,
Yes - newer cars have the CTHE engine designation (From May 2012), even those have had subtle revisions to combat high oil consumption but it is much improved over the early CAVE engines.
I had a replacement engine last December and I am much happier now, no burning oil from what I can see. I would like to think that VW are on top of this issue now, I am sure others may disagree who are still going through the pain of oil consumption tests and so on.
This of course left me in a quandary. The brand new, never been driven car (Flash Red) is 2 months older than the demonstrator and it has the older engine. The demonstrator (Reflex Silver) has only 250KMs on the clock. Both cars are very sharply priced, but they will give me another £140 off if I take the demonstrator. Just to really muddy the water, they also have an Oryx White with bi-xenons and new CTHE engine. BUT they want an additional £1200 for it (they discounted the options by about £500). Decisions, decisions...
Re: Are You Using Oil?
This thread has me worried sick
I just got a new style Polo on Friday and its from Jan 2010.... Was it traded because its got awful oil?!
:(

Re: Are You Using Oil?
If it is a Jan 2010 it won't be a GTI (not the latest version). This oil thread relates to the 180PS 1.4.aaronon wrote:This thread has me worried sick

Re: Are You Using Oil?
If it were me, I would go for the oryx white one and try and strike a deal. Suprised that an August car still has a CAVE engine. Despite improvements always go for the later spec.scobb wrote:I went in to buy a MY13 5-door Polo GTI today, brand new. Re: Are You Using Oil?
That was my conclusion as well. I managed to twist my dealer's arm to knock another £250 off. So I've bought a 5-door (3-door isn't available in NZ) Oryx White, with bi-xenons and a 3 year service plan, list NZ$43,840 including on-road costs (about £24,370) for a discounted price of $38,000 drive away (approx £21,100). So, a $5,840 (~£3,000) discount, which I'm pretty happy with. NZ cars are pretty high spec as standard, so out of curiosity, I configured an identical car on the VW UK site and came to a list price price of £24,229 +ORCs (surprisingly similar to the NZ price), so about 13% discount off list + whatever you pay for ORCs in the UK.skipster wrote:If it were me, I would go for the oryx white one and try and strike a deal. I get the car in 2 weeks, as it is currently under wraps in Auckland. I'm told it will be the only one in the South Island of this spec (mind you, there are only 1,000,000 people and probably only about 15 Polo GTIs, so that's not too hard
Back to the original purpose of the thread - let's hope the CTHE engine fitted to my new car proves not to be an oil burner!
Re: Are You Using Oil?
Fantastic Simon, sounds like a great deal. I don't think you will have any issue regarding oil burning, my replacement engine is way, way better! Enjoy - look forward to seeing some updates from you!
Re: Are You Using Oil?
My car went in for another replacement breather pipe, and after a 60 mile oil consumption test the dealer said it had used NO oil.
Then then said they want me to do a 700 mile oil consumption test
They really wanted me to continue to be an unpaid member of the VW technical department. After doing a few miles, the bootlid is again sooty and I still get the occasional smoke from the exhaust
After some absolutely dreadful incompetance from the service department at Beadles in Sevenoaks, and some equally poor backup from VW, I was so sick and tired of the car and VW that I have sold the car and have got a new Suzuki Swift Sport.

There definately is a Polo GTI on the secondhand market now with problems. Mineaaronon wrote:This thread has me worried sick

Re: Are You Using Oil?
60 miles! You can't draw any conclusions from that, indeed it would hardly of burned off any in that mileage, 625 miles (1000km) is the normal measurement. My car went in for another replacement breather pipe, and after a 60 mile oil consumption test the dealer said it had used NO oil.
That is really poor, you needed a new engine foggy but its academic now. So sorry to hear this, enjoy the Suzuki. They are very good cars.
As soon as the service manager told me that it would be 60 miles, I told him that was BS. He said nothing to contradict me but said that is what VW wanted.skipster wrote:60 miles! Because the car was just below the VW idea of acceptable oil usage (which is far too much in my opinion), I don't think they were prepared to pay for a new engine. I suspect they are hoping that these new pipes will improve things just enough so that they can turn around and say that it meets their pitiful standards.
If I had kept the car I was probably condemned to regularly topping up the oil and washing the boot lid, worrying that the deposits were damaging the catalyst, valves or something else. That task has now been placed with some other poor soul. I apologise in advance if that will be anybody on this forum, you have been warned
Re: Are You Using Oil?
Reading through this it seems that the issues may still be there with CHTE engine,
Are people getting the impression that the new breather pipe is helping with the problem or are you still suffering with oil consumption issues?
I had a MY10 plate Ibiza Cupra to which i went through all the hassle with the CAVE engine, i had this replaced with the CHTE engine, but in the process of having the engine changed some thing with the ESP system went wrong and the car was given back to the dealers.
I have just placed an order for a MY13 GTI which i am hoping will come with the breather mod done already.
Lets see if i have as many problems with this as i did with the Cupra

Re: Are You Using Oil?
There won't be any problems with a MY13, infact I think mid May onwards MY14 will be in production. It is true though that the CTHE engine needed the breather mod, so I would mention this to the dealer but I would expect yours to have this.vedubber wrote:Reading through this it seems that the issues may still be there with CHTE engine,

When you say MY14 are you referring to a new shape polo or a facelift?skipster wrote:There won't be any problems with a MY13, infact I think mid May onwards MY14 will be in production. Re: Are You Using Oil?
No, not at all. There is no new Polo or facelift, this is referring to the spec for the coming year. They do have interim MY versions so MY13.5 (Nov 12) would be the likely build spec at the moment. This would include all breather mods. MY14 may not have anything of note, last year I noticed the alloys were changed for MY13 (darker Monza) so that was somewhat more significant. When you say MY14 are you referring to a new shape polo or a facelift?]
