tdi clutch renewal

Post by onlydiesels »

well today I finally got round to renewing my clutch + flywheel..I've had it all in the garage for around 9 months
when I removed the original (I think.!.not bad with 97k on it) I found that the pressure plate had a spring/finger missing but there was no visible damage to anything which was a surprise considering that it would be spring steel and hard as nails so prob quite lucky there..
anyway, it`s a pd100 so I went the g60 flywheel/vr6 clutch route which has totally transformed the way the car picks up when you put your foot down, less vibration on acceleration....only downside is that there is a bit of chatter from the gearbox assy on idle which stops when you put the pedal down so I`m wondering now if it could be spigot shaft bearings ??
early days yet obviously but first impressions are good but wether I can live with the chatter is another matter..time will tell..
would I opt for the same set up again ?..sorry but I just don`t know..............yet :?

I took the exact same route about 12months ago. After mine was fitted i actually took it back to stealth tuning as thought as you did that the noise was the clutch release bearing. Was told it wasn't but a vibration in the gbox that the DMF previously removed. You don't notice the chatter after a while. What i don't understand is why the noise exists? Other cars that come with SMF's fitted as standard don't chatter... Would love to hear a technical explanation of the 'SMF chatter' if anyone is willing and able!?
