Polo BlueGT 3 months and 2500 miles

Post by Garfy »

I have now had my BlueGT for 3 months and covered 2500 miles and feel compelled to share a short summary of my opinion.

Plus Points:
It is comfortable over a long distance drive and there isvery little crashing when hitting road imperfections like in my previous Golf GTi
The car is quiet in the cabin and refined for daily use
48 mpg isn't bad, but I probably expected better. If you drive it properly (I mean have fun) watch that mpg fall through the floor.
it is fast (ish). After a GTi it doesn't feel that fast though.
Blue Silk paint option gets lots of positive comments from people.
DAB radio, nice touch.
Cruise control is standard - Ace!
£20 a year Road Tax - Ace again!

Negative points:
Handling only mediocre. The GTi made me grin from ear to ear every drive. The BlueGT is a bit "so what?"
The MDI socket in the glove compartment is hard to reach and fiddly to unplug when changing between USB and iPod. This is getting irritating now.
The iPod always starts playing from the first track alphabetically each time you turn the ignition on. This is even more annoying, having to scroll back through playlists to find where I was last listening.
it doesn't auto lock like all my other VAG cars have.
Only drivers door unlocks when the remote key is pressed. Supposed to be 2 presses for all doors, more like 4 or 5. Getting very annoying now
Auto lights not available even as an option - very tight not to be standard fit.
After market look Bluetooth works well but so low rent - if I'm spending the thick end of £20k I expect better than this.
Why can't I get electric fold mirrors as an option?

In summary it is the small things that VW could easily put right which have spoilt an otherwise promising car.

mine has gone through the 3,500 mile barrier and got a nice 24 hour blast to Brussels planned for it

- in reality i wasn't bothered with the auto lights
- i believe the autolock can be done via VCDS (i miss this)
- folding mirrors would have been nice, however, these tend to have a mind of their own after a few years
- don't mind the i-phone being in the glove box, which is way better than the Golf

handling is safe and predictable with plenty of understeer, that said the rear can be a bit playful, brakes could do with being larger (set up looks the same size as a polo GTI), i had a shock going back to this after 1,500 miles around europe in the 35 which has a proper suspension set up and AP 4 pots, i followed my wife who was driving the 35 and was driving the door handles off the polo to keep with it in the corners and i know for a fact she wasn't really driving the golf that hard

You can make the steering feel better using vcds too

I wouldn't know where to begin with vcds. I see lots of posts on here relating to vcds, but I'm afraid it goes over my head.

Precisely. You can programme some "more weight" in to the steering to get a bit more feel in it. :)

And also a different suspension should help on the cornering. :)

Thing is though guys, don't forget the Blue GT is only a "warm" hatch, not a "hot" hatch and as such, I would have been staggered if it could keep up with a modded Golf ED.

You are right if course. It is a warm hatch not a hot hatch.

Sadly, the Fiesta ST only has 3 doors

mrs w has been using the GT for a few days and funnily enough here only criticism is the brakes

personally i don't mind the steering weight, as around town its firm enough when battling multi storeys

i wanted a warm hatch as a daily as whilst i love my Golf i wouldn't want to use it everyday for around town etc as most of the time you just want to potter

the Blue GT is such an easy car to live with on a day to day basis

my issue is down to personal preference, wish they had a bit more initial bite and feel and were more progressive when enjoying some spirited driving

Well I've reached 2000 miles in month in mine and would agree with the general points. However the steering at normal road speed is little lighter than I'd prefer. Can't fault the suspension for normal road driving it very well damped and the there is little road/engine noise in the cabin.

Brake wise I'd agree that there is something not quite right with the setup, personally I find initial bite to be okay but a general lack of action beyond this. I generally have to wind more power on achieve retardation. However if I initially press the peddle harder braking is far from smooth with the likely outcome that I'll need to release the peddle/reduce pressure long before my ideal stopping point.

First decent run out yesterday. I drove the Blue GT from East Yorkshire to Staffordshire via M1 with 4 of us on board. By staying at the speed limit wherever possible I managed 55.7 mpg on the outward journey and a rather less impressive 51.2 mpg on the return journey.

This is according to the MFD which I suspect is rather optimistic if the actual figure was calculated.
