2013 GTI Engine Strip
2013 GTI Engine Strip
Posted a little while ago about my wife's GTI having a strange rattle. Booked it in to VW as its still under warranty and they called me today to say that they have found low compression on one cylinder and will be stripping the engine to find out the fault.
Car has done 17,000 miles so I asked the dealer if VW will replace the engine, they were unsure and once they have found the issue and sent the details off to VW they will see what VW come back with. I have also suggested that it would be reasonable for VW to provide a courtesy car as they are suggesting it will be about a week.
Anyone else had anything similar?

Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
a 1.4 TSI with twincharger that went wrong? must be the first one.
no the 1.4TSI has a history of issues such as leaking/failing oil scrape rings. it's not the best engine VW has made and the mechanics are probably aware of that.

Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
According to the dealer an injector issue has damaged a valve and melted the spark plug. I'm waiting to see what VW decide they will do to to remedy the problem. I assume they will replace the head and injectors.
Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
The mechanics are very aware of the engine's issues.
VW arrogance in never admitting any problems with the engine.
Same mindset re the emissions cover up.

Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
Don't think I will plan on keeping it much longer after it has been repaired. Don't really want to have issues after it goes out of warranty in March.
Re: RE: Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
Probably wise. It was very hit and miss if owners had problems with this engine. I had a new engine under warranty and it still drank oil. Some guys had a couple of new engines and still had issues, while some owners had no such problems. I've read that the engine was a good idea but brought to production too soon so design defects remained.Roger645 wrote:Don't think I will plan on keeping it much longer after it has been repaired. Im pleased I now have the 6C GTI which sips oil and is a dream to drive. Good luck with it.

Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
Thanks, glad to hear that the newer GTI is better. Once I get it back I'll start to look at some possible replacements.
Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
I had issues with my 2012 GTI. Had an engine replacement to the CTHE engine (middle of 2014) and now runs a dream. Does seem to be very hit and miss. Mine is running stage 1 and soon to be stage 2 as well. No issues.
Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
I should find out net week what VW will do to resolve it, based on some searching on the net I do expect they will change the engine rather than just the head and injectors.
It wasn't serviced that long ago so whatever failed to cause this did it quickly.

Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
Had the exact same issue with mine about 2 years ago with 20000kms on the clock...low compression 3rd cylinder.....mine used about 350ml of oil every 1000km...after about 2 months at the dealer while they went through all the tests and sending info to Germany they replaced the head and injectors. Never had any issue after that and after another 15000kms only put in 500ml of oil so looks to be sorted but although I love the car(smile every time I go for a drive) will be looking for something else soon as don't want look over my shoulder waiting for mine to be one of the unlucky number.

2 months! That's a long time, glad the dealer has given me a courtesy car if they intend on keeping it that long. We are relocating in 2 weeks and will be 150 miles from the dealer. Looks like I need to have a chat with them later in the week to understand what their plans are. I might ask them how much they will give me for the car once it's fixed either as a trade in or outright purchase.LocoPolo70 wrote:Had the exact same issue with mine about 2 years ago with 20000kms on the clock...low compression 3rd cylinder.....mine used about 350ml of oil every 1000km...after about 2 months at the dealer while they went through all the tests and sending info to Germany they replaced the head and injectors. Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
So, the car is back, they replaced the engine and I have to go back after 1000 miles for them to check it over. Time to decide what my next move is.
Re: 2013 GTI Engine Strip
Think the technicians cross their fingers when they put these replacement engines in.

The dealer gave me the parts list and cost sheet, glad I wasn't paying!JohnPolo wrote:Think the technicians cross their fingers when they put these replacement engines in.
