I tried a 1.2 SEL before a GTI demo was available and really liked it so I knew the Polo 6r was going to be good for me. However the GTI is very different when it comes to performance so if you already have a GTI then once you have driven it your mind will be made up.

I agree I am not a fan of the A1 either but it does look better than the Fabia and not as good as the Ibiza. Polo is the better looking of the bunch but then again I would say that.

Yes Ibiza would be my second choice if I had to make it. A few years ago I nearly went for a Leon Cupra instead of a MkIV Golf GTI as I preferred the styling but stuck with VW brand.

Sorry to resurrect an old thread but seeing as some of you own a 1.2 TSI I thought you may be able to help! I'm just wondering what MPG you have been getting during motorway driving (65-70mph). Also, what is the RPM at 70mph in 6th gear?

Thanks,

Alex

Does anybody know how heavy the new Polo's are?
3 door versions weigh in at:

Petrol
  • 1.2 (60 and 70 PS versions) = 1067 kg
  • 1.4 Manual = 1070kg
  • 1.2 TSI = 1088kg
  • 1.4 DSG = 1104kg
  • 1.4 TSI DSG (GTI) = 1269kg
Diesel
  • 1.2 TDI = 1132kg
  • 1.2 TDI (Bluemotion) = 1150kg
  • 1.6 TDI = 1157kg
Five door versions are an extra 25kg

That GTi badge must be really heavy!

Unfortunately we don't have GTi in South Africa yet.. And only 5 door is available here. I'm looking at getting one of these in May :)

Overall, an attractive car with some nice features. But i wish the pedals were about four cm to the right: with my big feet I cannot get my left foot past the clutch pedal and onto the footrest. And the accelerator action is a bit bizarre, at unpredictable times I have to depress the pedal some distance to get any response, and this could be dangerous. Overall I feel I maybe should have looked around more. (added about a month later) : I had hoped that I would get used to the pedals, but I've decided I'll have to change the car. It has a lot of attractive features, but proper control of the car depends on correct pedal operation. I think the pedal layout is ridiculous and I urge anyone thinking of buying a Polo to take a test drive for some distance around town.
(Added February 25th) Decided I have to dispose of the Polo after three month's ownership ! The pedals were ridiculously spaced, it was too easy to push the brake instead of the accelerator; this could be dangerous in traffic. Also reverse gear sometimes took several attempts to engage fully. VW used to have a good reputation but in respect of the Polo they have gone downhill in some ways. Good-bye, readers, that's it from me !
