2016 Polo GTI oil

Numerous oil threads but there's a lot of reading so thought I'd start a new one. Simple question.

Does my oil need changing after 9 months? 5500 miles.

I've never changed oil myself. Wouldn't have a clue how. The most I can do is fill the water for the wipers, lol.

I do have a friend who's confident he can help though.

Does anyone know of a good instructional video for the 2016 GTI? Couldn't see one on YouTube.

And what oil should I use?

Is your car's service regime set to time and distance or flexible long life servicing? Do you have a service plan (in which case you'll be on the time and distance service regime)?

If you're on time and distance (T&D) then your first service will be due at 10,000 miles or 12 months, whichever is the soonest. If you're on long life servicing, then it's the soonest of when the car tells you it needs to be serviced or 24 months. Cars come from the factory set for long life servicing, so if you don't have a service plan and you didn't specifically ask the dealer to set your service regime to T&D, then your car will currently be set for long life. However, based on your low annual mileage, it looks as if T&D would be more appropriate for you, and I'd get an oil change service carried out at 12 months and ask the dealer to change the service regime to T&D.

Although there's no requirement for servicing to be undertaken by VW, I personally wouldn't let a friend undertake an oil change service on my car (others may disagree!); to ensure my warranty is maintained, I'd either get this done by the franchised VW dealer or a good independent VW specialist. If you use an independent specialist, it's important that all parts / fluids are either VW or VW approved, and you keep all invoices and receipts to prove this if you subsequently need to get any warranty work undertaken. The benefit of using the VW dealer network is that any issues around warranty should be eliminated, plus the dealer will apply any software updates that might be applicable to your car at time of service.

Don't think VW have provided a free oil top up kit for some years now, although some dealers may give one to you if you ask when you take delivery of your car. Regarding what oil you need for topping up; page 215 of your owners manual provides the details. The important thing is that it meets VW"s spec requirements. Suggest you buy a top up kit from the dealer; that way you should be getting the correct oil.

If you do lots of short trips where the engine does not get fully hot - oil temperature does not reach full operating temperature to get rid of water condensation then an intermediate oil and filter change would be something that helps reduce wear. This is what I do as necessary. Use VW branded parts and correct specification oil. Need a large oil tray though as from research seems to be nearly 6 litres with filter!!
