Polo 6r heater fault - cold air only

Post by ihpj »

Please could I get some help with the following fault/issue with my Polo...

'61' 2011 (2012MY) Polo 6r 5 door MATCH. 1.4 petrol with 7 speed DSG. Climatronic (manual) A/C controls.

As the wether has started to get colder, I have found the interior heater only blows cold air, no matter what the temperature setting. The fan works on all 4 speed settings and the A/C + Recirculation controls work just fine. The blower direction (windscreen, feet only etc.) also does not work, as no matter which direction the airflow is set to, air is blown out the vents. The unit illuminates correctly when headlights are used. I have run a full VCDS on the car and zero faults come up with the HVAC.

BACKGROUND:
In the last 6 weeks I have replaced the RCD310 with a genuine RNS510 (LED type) and 9W7 bluetooth module. Prior to collecting the vehicle it had its timing belt and water pump (with coolant) changed.

SYMPTOMS:
As the vehicle was bought in May of this year, with the warm weather, I cannot recall testing to see if the heater actually worked. I do know the A/C works just fine. I can also recall, on an odd occasions, when turning the temperature knob, it was very stiff to turn. It kind of went to the 10-past the hour setting but wouldn't move further. Moving it back and then round again did not resolve the issue. Then on other times, it would rotate round just fine. When it was stuck I did force it a little and it would 'click' and then rotate round.

CONCERN:
When I installed the RNS510 I am pretty sure I did not disturb the heater controls. I have Google'd the module and see that it is an electrical connection on the rear (no push/pull rods). This says to me that these controls are electronic. Ergo, if there is a fault, I would expect VCDS to pick it up? But the odd thing is, VCDS is reporting zero faults with the HVAC system.

As the car was bought as an AUC from VW (Das Welt) I have booked it in to mu local Dealer for early October. However I am concerned:

* they might notice vehicle is modified from original spec. and claim Warranty is now void - Ill cross that bridge should I come it.
* could I have knocked the heater control unit somehow?
* it may be an airlock in the system as, when the coolant was changed, it wasn't bled properly? Engine appears to heat up just fine as the engine fan will kick in every so often.
* unit itself is faulty and needs replacing. If warranty won't cover it, then I'll buy a unit from the forum, is it P+P?

Any thoughts and a advice greatly appreciated!

I'd maybe take it out and have a look to make sure all the heater controls are in correctly!

When my mate swapped his stereo in his fiesta (different car I know) he did knock one of the cables that controls the heater and had similar symptoms!

Is it a climatronic (with digital screen) or manual AC (with three round knobs)? Your second phrase confuses me a bit.
The vapour lock would disappear as soon as the engine reaches operating temperature and switches from small to large circulation. Don't worry. VW won't deny your claim due to the bluetooth or RNS, installing this doesn't have anything to do with the heater controls.

Maybe consider that you might have more than one problem!

When the coolant is removed/replaced in that version of engine, it can take a lot of effort to get rid of any trapped air, it simply will not purge the air out by itself, I know this after having a similar problem with a 1.4 16V 85PS Ibiza when I replaced the engine coolant sensor.

The only way to get rid of any trapped air is:- remove the coolant filler cap, with a container of prefixed coolant in one hand, remove the engine temperature sensor, fill the coolant until air bubbles stop coming out of where the temperature sensor was, then refit the temperature sensor and fill the coolant up to the correct level - I only found that out after having heat/no heat problems!

It is a pity that VCDS does not reveal any problems with the flap motors though!

VCDS is capable of showing trouble codes for the positioning motors of climatronic (digital display), i.e.:

Thank you to you all for taking the time to read and post.

For clarity, the car has the 3 dial (manual) A/C controls. I am going to VCDS it again tonight and will post up the log. I'm wondering if this is an airlock as I cannot believe I was that cack-handed in installing the RNS510 I damaged the manual controls in some way? I mean it is possible, but I'd really be surprised...

I'll try to run Google translate at the website you linked iichel and see if I can't delve into those diagnostics.

One question, is VCDS able to connect to the HVAC, if it has completely failed VCDS might not be able to communicate with it, ie maybe the fuse that it uses has blown? When VCDS performs an auto scan, if any controllers are completely without power, they will not be able to communicate with VCDS, so as it does not know exactly which controllers are on a specific car due to options etc, in its default state when running auto scan, VCDS will just grab the list of controllers that range of cars might have, then sequentially try to communicate with them.

I've just scanned a friends old Passat to see if it will reveal what is wrong with some CCM controlled functions - no luck there as the CCM has now lost power so is invisible!

The presence of button background lighting indicates the that power, ground and convenience CAN are OK. the heating is manual AC, so I think the problem is more likely mechanic than electric.

Sorry for the delay in posting my VCDS scan log, I couldn't recall my password so was stuck trying to remember it

Anyhoo, below is my scan. I have obscured the VIN, and the turn signal error does result in bulb out warning on the dash intermittently. The heater and air flow direction controls do not work, and VCDS does not report any errors/faults. Car is booked into VW for early October.

And totally unrelated to the above issue, I have realised that although I have set a bluetooth code (4 digit set via VCDS) for Bluetooth, when pairing a new device it never seems to ask for it. I'm concerned anyone can potentially connect to Bluetooth in my car. The setup works fine, the 9W7 module is amazing as it streams Bluetooth audio in stereo and the MIC works an absolute treat for phonecalls. Everything works as it should so I'm prepared to live with if need be, but seems rather odd no code is asked for when pairing new devices?

Thank you, in advance...

Hi, I just fixed this exact issue with my Seat Ibiza 1.0 mpi 2016. I have three manual knobs on the heater control. I removed the heater control and behind it there were two bowden cables which control the heater temperature and the direction of air flow, my ones were not connected and all I needed to do was simply re-connect them, they only go in one way - make sure the controls work properly, if not you can turn the wires round whilst the heating is on to make sure the air flow works in the correct positions when turning the control knobs.

Hope this helps, couldn't find this info anywhere, had to figure it out. All VAG cars use similar components so this should work with polos and other vag models.

Cheers
Atif
