replacement/second car key

Post by colingZA »

Good afternoon forumites!

I bought a Polo 9N 5th hand and only got one key. Is this easy to replace/get a second key?

The wife drove off to work with my key in her jacket and made me wonder, how would I go about getting to work if this key is permanently gone?

Thanks,

Colin

Hi, if it is a folding key with a remote fob integrated into it, you could buy a "same as your one" but used on ebay, buy a new blank blade and buy a new unused transponder for engine "unlocking", then get that blade cut to suit your locks and the transponder programmed to suit your car's engine "lock".

If it is plain key you need, you can get them from Timpsons(sp?) or some other auto locksmith and get it prog'd to be the same as your other key, though how this works with "rolling codes" I do not know, no doubt someone will come back with better suggestions, though, if you are keen to have a second key - and that is a very smart move - why not book your car into your local VW dealer who will order an unprog'd key in already cut to suit your locks, then code it and "remove" all other missing keys.

Edit:- in my experience, with that age of car, when it was new, it would have come with keys, but it would not have come with any labels with the code for that car, though I think that a VW dealer should know the lock code/pattern from its VIN or even reg number.

If you have one key already, you can pick up a new key from here - http://advanced-keys.co.uk/index.php?ro ... =59_118.If you post a pic of your current key, I can help you pick the right one.

However, youll need a local specialist key cutter that can cut laser keys to copy your existing key, and then itll need programming which either the dealer or an autolocksmith can do

A good mobile autolocksmith will be able to provide the key, cut it, and code it for much less than the dealer would charge. This is probably the easier route.

Hi guys,

That is not a photo of my key, not sure how to add to the site, but the same shape. On the one side it has a Huf logo and the other W3 HAA engraved.

Regards,

Colin

That’s a HAA profile with a glass transponder. I’ll send you the link shortly

Good morning!

Stopped over at the local Timpson on hte ay home over the weekend and they scanned the key and it turns out they can't copy the key as it is a "magic 2" transponder.

Timpsons can’t do modern keys. You’ll need a proper auto locksmith who can code it to the car
