A mistake but no intervention from front assist

I have to admit my mistake here. I was looking right at a car out of shot which was approaching and left it late to indicate left. I did look ahead to check all was ok and observed the Mercedes clear the roundabout and that all was well or so I thought. Lesson learned about expecting the unexpected or in this case an absolute cockwomble on a bike.

Interestingly, there was no intervention from the front assist.

Noticed a small segment on Top Gear about VW front assist, using a Passat.
They tried a static cardboard dummy, it ran it over.
They tried a moving cardboard dummy, it ran it over.
They then tried a human jumping around in front of it, it would have ran him over if he hadn't jumped.

I'm not sure if cardboard would give much of a return for the radar system.



The system has been tested by EuroNCAP, and functions fine. I feel like their testing procedure is probably a little bit better than Top Gear's!

Front Assist is just that- an assistant. It can't 'see' everything, it can't predict the future, and it has to be tuned to minimise false positives. This is why it won't flare up objects moving towards the car- otherwise oncoming traffic would be causing problems all the time. I've not seen the Top Gear segment, but based on what Andy said- jumping around would probably confuse it. Someone walking in from the side (EG idiot walking across the road without looking) would trigger it, as that's the motion it's looking for.

You need to watch it.
They acknowledged the first test (static dummy) was unlikely to trigger it, or the likes of traffic lights would also trigger it.
The second and third tests were a bit more worrying.
Not a worry to me, as I already think it's a pile of pish and wouldn't even remotely rely on it, but an eye opener all the same.
