Auto lights - 2013 1.2TSI BlueMotion Comfortline
Hello,
Having ordered and used a cheap knockoff auto light switch for about a week, I've realised it makes a lot of compromises in functionality and comfort to do just the one thing - switch headlights on in the dark. If you're interested, here's my take on (this particular) knockoff auto light switches:
- Build quality is poor (although you won't be using it much due to the auto function)
- Uses parking lights as daytime lights instead of the car's built-in daytime lights
- Module is not straight in the dash, e.g. "Auto" text is crooked and "0" is off-centre (6C switch is a slightly different design to 6R - thanks to iichel for the info)
- Interior dimming has no effect on module LEDs, always at full brightness
- Start-stop-function causes headlights to briefly turn off when car starts up, leading other drivers to think you are flashing your headlights at them
- Because the car isn't coded for auto lights, delayed light turn off (and coming home/leaving home lights) cause the door chime to ring
All fairly niggly and annoying faults just to get your headlights on automatically.
This is what I bought: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/33048291793.html
So I wonder - what is the most cost-effective way of getting more or less OEM functionality and features without all the drawbacks of the knockoff switches? (Paging iichel/Ciclo? )

Re: Auto lights - Cheap switch vs. entire OEM system
I guess it depends on whether your car has a suitable BCM (start/stop or bi-xenon from factory). Otherwise you're looking at a bcm replacement/upgrade and that's where cost effective ends..

Re: Auto lights - Cheap switch vs. entire OEM system
I have start-stop, yeah, but haven't had a chance to run a VCDS scan yet. Would be nice to have rain sensors and other features, but it looks like a lot of electrical work. Thankfully you and others have posted great how-to's with lots of photos.

Re: Auto lights - Cheap switch vs. entire OEM system
Looks like you bought a polo 6c light switch though. Anyway, if you have start stop, a rain and light sensor and vcds, your can install a wiring loom and a lightswitch from a golf 6. That way your installation is fully OEM with proper functioning.

Re: Auto lights - Cheap switch vs. entire OEM system
With AliExpress, you never know what you get... It has the correct 14-pin connector for my car, but yes the switch is chrome instead of satin.
I don't have a rain sensor, but I would like to install one in the future. I can consider that later, though.
If I just want auto lights and CH/LH, I guess my BCM is compatible so I would only need:
- A (modified?) wiring harness from the LCM to the BCM, with two new pins going to the BCM
- A new, OEM (not a copy) auto switch
- VCDS to code the functions
Is this correct? This is based on Ciclo's guide: https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B2nv91Y ... E1bk0/edit

Re: Auto lights - Cheap switch vs. entire OEM system
Yes but you must have the rain and light sensor for the auto lights to work. Without it, the installation will not work.

Re: Auto lights - Cheap switch vs. entire OEM system
Ah of course, the cheap Chinese ones have the built-in sensor. Okay, so I guess that's also not a big deal - there is also a guide to install the rain sensor on the window. Thanks a lot for the help!

Re: Auto lights - Cheap switch vs. entire OEM system
You're welcome. There are two kinds of rain sensor. The 1k0 and the 5k7. First one is square, the second is round. They have mount glued to the glass and hold the auto dimming mirror.

Re: Auto lights - Cheap switch vs. entire OEM system
Yeah looks like there are two versions. I found a spare parts/crashed car with a sensor and mirror locally near me. Hopefully everything works and comes off in one piece...

Perhaps it's also possible to take the mirror mount but they are not expensive to replace.

Re: Auto lights - Cheap switch vs. entire OEM system
I managed to get an autoscan of my car through a coworker. I was wondering if you could confirm for me that my BCM is modifiable for factory autolights and xenons, and that I won't need to buy another one? It seems to be an edge case as its an 088 F. Thanks!
Would 6C factory LED headlights also be compatible with the BCM, if I happened across a set cheap enough?
Are there really any retrofit limitations this BCM might have? Sorry, very broad question.
Don't worry about the fault codes.

Re: Auto lights - 2013 1.2TSI BlueMotion Comfortline
This BCM has a lot of options. You can do OEM auto lights, but you need the rain and light sensor.
It cannot do 6C LED, you need a 7E0 BCM Max for this. It can however do OEM bi-xenon.
