Pre-crash preventive occupant protection

Post by MattHGR »

Has anyone got this on their car, and is it useful ?
When I ordered my car, I didn't want to pay for this, as the automatic window closing seemed a little useless for £140.

However, since my car has the adaptive cruise radar and already preconditions the brakes if it senses an upcoming crash, I'm thinking this could just be enabled for free using a tool like vcds or obdII.

Has anyone got this, and has anyone enabled it themselves instead of getting it from factory ?

I added it to the spec. on my car. I guess it’s only useful in a pre-crash situation. Thankfully I’ve never needed it. I don’t know if it can be enabled retrospectively though.

Is there anything else to the system, like pre-tensioning seat belts?

If the hardware is already there, no reason it couldn't be enabled. I have enabled a few options on other VWs in the past, like XDS+, a £280 option on the Scirocco in 2011. VW may have gotten better at stopping you enabling stuff - no-one has managed to get Polo's voice control for free yet (that I know of).

Yes. The seatbelt tensioning is part of the system so there maybe some hardware associated with this.

The VW price guide describes it as:

“PreCrash preventive occupant protection.
Tensioning of the front seat belts, closing of electric windows, closing of optional panoramic sunroof if fitted, and preconditioning of brake systems should a critical driving situations be detected”

It's telling you you're driving too close to the car in front.
Drop back a bit and the symbol goes away.

They have the same feature on Audi cars, but instead of car!car, you get a thumbs up for tailgating.

I got that option on mine, but the only person who will tell you if it is useful will be the one who had a prang :)

Just for interest sake, this pre-crash is not active while in "Sport" mode.
