it will be required to be changed after a set time or mileage.
so the car is 5 years old which is the usual time between timing belt changes.

Took mine in, was told the belt only gets changed after 180-250k kms (VW said 180k, certified mecanic with access to VW car info said after 230k), they said to just have it checked reguarly, and said its a lifetime belt, they didnt have the option on their system to book the car in because it wasnt due, my car is also 5 years old.
But better be safe then sorry, but out of curiosity ask them why it needs to be replaced if VW said its lifetime.
The Ea211 engines should have a lifetime belt, VW did this as there was so many issue on the chain in the previous engine model, so they improved the reliability.(Dont hold me to the statement, i read it somewhere)

Dear people when will you understand that the life time of the car it's warranty period.
Any brand doesn't care if the car starts breaking after the period, and if it becomes due service its more money in their pocket!
These are not the cars from 80-90's that were built and tested to last.

Remember that the OP's car has an earlier version of engine, so maybe not one of the EA211 family and so maybe it has not got a "for life" cambelt or even a cambelt, I don't know as I have not checked that engine.
