0w20 oil Volkswagen Polo GTI

Post by fran_92 »

Hi everyone,

My car will need a refill of oil in a short time. The problem is that I don't know what oil the car needs, because when I call to Volkswagen they say to me a different oil each time: 0w20, 0w30 and 5w30 they have said to me different workers..

So, I want to discard. I have read that the 0W20 oil is green colour. Can anyone confirm that information? I want to know if you have 0w20 oil, when you check the oil level with a paper, if the oil is green.

Thanks in advance!

Hello fran_92,

To pick the correct engine oil for your car, you should be looking at what is the approved VW specification engine oil for your car's engine.

If you open the bonnet and look at the front section of the engine bay, you should see a grey label.
For my Polo the correct engine oil specification is VW 502 00, as shown in the photo below.

My Polo have the 1.6 MPi petrol engine, with engine code: CWVB.
But your Polo GTi have a different engine, so your engine could require a different engine oil specification.

Once we know the engine oil specification, we can go buy engine oil which is approved by VW under that specification.

For example, within the VW 502 00 specification there could be more than one viscosity, from what I know there are 10W40, 5W30 & 5W40 etc...
So, pick the viscosity which suit the climate pattern at where you live.

The main idea is the engine oil need to be approved by VW under the specification which fit your car's engine.

Alternatively, if you know your engine code, you can look at the chart below:

Below is a list of country which is not compliant with EN 228 standard, FYI:

Thanks ho8882000

The problem is that my car can have two oil specifications, and with those specifications there are 3 oils: 0w20 (508 00), 0w30 and 5w30 (504 00)

So, I don't want to mix oils inside my engine. You can mix 0w30 and 5w30 in a small quantity because they are of the same specification, 504 00, but you can't mix 504 00 oil with 508 00 oil. That's the reason why I am asking if the 0w20 oil is green, to discard it.

Sorry, it is my misunderstanding of your question.

0W20 engine oil could be green in colour from one manufacturer, and it could be another colour from a different manufacturer.

I think you should drain all the old oil out and put fresh new oil in your engine, then you won't be mixing anything and know exactly what oil is in your engine.

Why not?
What would happen if you did?

They have different properties and compositions. They can react and create "sludges" in the car crankcase.
