I guess they think the lack of torque of the smaller engine needs more gears, but the Gti definitely needs more.
Or a higher 6th gear.
It's not a relaxed cruiser.

MK7 Golf GTI and R have the 7 speed wet clutch gearbox, as does my 2019 Audi A4 Avant 40 TDI (190ps) - I suppose they need that 7th gear to squeeze under an emissions threshold.

Pretty much every VAG DSG car under 170ps uses the 7 speed dry clutch, the higher output cars would shred the dry plates in a much shorter time frame than would be expected for the wet clutch DSG boxes.

Even though my 31 mile each way commute is on a dual carriageway doing 75mph for 28 miles of it, my A4 is rarely in 7th gear. It is geared so high, the opportunities to be in 7th gear and not labour the engine are few and far between.

If you're on the flat at 75mph it will switch up to 7th, the slightest incline and it knocks down to 6th. Downhill it won't shift up to 7th until almost 70mph and can stay there down to about 58mph as long as you're still going downhill. If it's in 7th for even 10% of the time on a dual carriageway cruise, i'd be amazed.

I wouldn't say that the Polo GTI is droney in 6th at 70mph. 6th gear is pretty high, making 2400rpm at 80mph - barely higher geared than the Golf GTD (2250rpm at 80mph in 6th). My Manual Golf R was doing 3100rpm in 6th at 80mph.

From VW's point of view there'll be very little advantage in adding the 7th cog to a Polo GTI for emissions/fuel economy.

I don’t find my GTI+ droney at cruising speed. Compared to some warm and hot hatches I’ve owned throughout my 40+ years of driving, the Polo GTI+ is quite a relaxed cruiser.

It's all relative, of course, but I do find the Gti a noisy and therefore tiring cruiser.
Even compared with my previous 'beats' , 80mph is a noisier affair in the Gti (exhaust and tyres).
I feel another gear would deal with the exhaust note, the revs seem to make the exhaust drone.
Then you get the wife's Evoque, which wafts along so silently that even she found herself doing a very illegal speed the other day. :D
But I didn't buy it to cruise, really, so not a huge problem.

Recently had an opf/gpf back Milltek exhaust system fitted to my car and I have also wrapped the painted part above the grill in gloss black. Subtle difference but imo looks much better. The exhaust us also noticeably better after only around 100miles. Not the best photos but not has much time to get out.

Yeah, did it myself. Took maybe 10minutes was a bit fiddly but worked out well.

It isn't resonated. After hard drives there is alot of sound from inside and I get the occasionally fart or bang from it but they are very few and far between. I have heard it does take a while to get the full sound out if the exhaust.

Got it from Badgeskins, just a sticker that goes over the radar badge but doesn't interfere.

It sounds really good.. the problem is that it is not legal without the middle resonator :(
